  • It's started already.

This is the end of the 2nd week of the Spring semester. A small handful of students do not have prereqs on file, so must pass a pretest to remain in the class. I notified them LAST week that tonight was the deadline to take the pretest. (Next Tues is the deadline for schedule changes)

What do I have in my email this morning?

"I tried to get the day off at work so I could take my pre test but I could not get it. Is it okay if I come in and take it tomorrow morning?"

Even in my syllabus, I have it in writing not to wait until the last day to take ANY tests--something ALWAYS happens!

Then there's this one from this afternoon:

"I was wondering if you could tell me what my grade isI know we haven't done much but my dad is curious and it would make him feel a lot better if he knew. If you could respond as soon as possible that would be wonderful."

Let's see, Monday the 16th was a holiday, and I had to cancel the 23rd due to a family emergency, so we have met exactly 2 times.....

    AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!

somebody please put me out of my misery!!

I don't blame you. One of my students asked me to calculate what her grade would have been had she followed the instructions on a test and answered all the test items.

Even if I wanted to do that kind of work and could (I have no idea if she would have put the correct answers, even if she'd followed the instructions), why would I? She flunked. End of story.

      What the.

I've asked some pretty weird favors of professors (if they have the syllabus, I request them to send it to me in advance so I can look it over and try to get an idea of how much time to devote in classes), but this takes cake. Wow.

And I've missed test deadlines, but I am always immensely grateful to professors who let me take the test late. I never plan on this and I never expect this and I hate delaying tests. Something ALWAYS happens!

Just tell her the potential is 100% - "But you didn't earn that, did you?"

If I have the syllabus ready before the first day of class, I don't mind sending the file and/or link to my students. After the first day---after they have received a hard copy---they get the link and an excerpt of the pertinent section...and a reminder, "...as stated in the first day syllabus..."

What's getting me now, is I have TOLD them I WILL be picking up homework, and to bring it to class every day, as I will NOT announce ahead of time which sections I'll be picking up, and that late homework will not be accepted. I think I had about 25% turned in homework today. They do get a week from the time the material is covered in class until the earliest I pick it up so they will have a chance to ask questions and make corrections. GAH!
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

i've asked teachers "am i going to be able to pass this course?" when i flubbed up a lot on assignments but ... if i failed it was my own fault. it's not the teacher's responsibility to jump through hoops if i failed to do my work properly.

At my uni we could get extensions to any deadline, even on one's dissertation's hand-in, as long as we had a decent reason...I had to give one because I had an ear infection so bad they gave me nice powerful sleepy meds for it, and I know two people (one being my Housemate) who got extensions because of bereavment/ill relatives.

I think Housemate's entire class got an extension once because the lecturer had to be rushed into hospital or something...

But, you know, we were reasonable about it and so were they, and we met our new deadline often before the day anyway. ^^
