  • Well, that was unexpected...

    But not unpleasant.

We have a new addition to our family now! A lady was selling chocolate labs outside Wal-mart and gave us a good deal.

The little lady is 6 weeks old. Need to give her her shots and finish deworming, but that's manageable.

Any advice on helping her get less scared? Or on potty training?

    CUTE!

You do realize how big she is going to get.

When you take her outside, always go to the same spot. This is where she is to go. Use a phrase such as "Do your business." Reward her when she goes.

Fortunately, we live in WV and have a nice sized fenced in yard. Once it gets warmer, she's going outside!

Thank you for the line though!

She is adorable. One of mine has a pooh bear that belongs to him and only him. He gets quite distressed on wash day when pooh is wrangled away. But always happy to see his friend again, specially when his nose tells him Grandma has held pooh and made pooh fluffy and whole again.

On more thing... She will need a tennis ball. Probably several. She will most likely carry one around everywhere she goes, slobbering all over it.

You'll probably want to invest in a Chuck-It

Most sports stores sell tennis balls by the bag and I have found these work better then the "dog" tennis balls. Something about them just holds up better.

Positive reinforcement. When you tell her to do something and she does it give her praise and a good rubbing of the ears, maybe a treat, but not always a treat. Then wean her off getting treats for the things, but always tell her what a good girl she is for doing what you tell her to do.
If you catch her about to go in the house pick her up and carry her outside, then when she goes, praise, praise, praise. This will get it through to her what you want.

And keep in mind that she is a baby and babies of every specie do have accidents that they will be ashamed of. Unless your talking about one of my younger cousins when he was a baby...

Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! I know she will have such a happy life in her new home!

If she ends up being the kind of dog who likes to chew her toys to bits, a Kong Wubba made entirely of rubber (heavy duty for big dogs) will hold up well and she'll probably drag it everywhere

Please, please tell me that you don't mean that when it warms up she's going to stay outside all the time. Dogs, pets of any kind, need lots of love and attention, that she just wouldn't be able to get if she's left out in the yard all the time while her people are in the house.

The following is my highly inexpert opinion on a number of subjects.

Six weeks? Wow, that's kind of young to be taken from her mother and litter mates. So far as getting her less scared, give a nice, warm, soft, cuddly place near where you spend most of your time, but out of any traffic patterns. The old wind up ticking clock wrapped in a towel might help also. A crate might help her feel a bit more secure, if you present it as a safe haven and train her properly.

When she's a few months old, consider starting her in on some obedience training classes, or teach her yourself if you know how. A no bottle (simple spray bottle filled with plain water and set so it shoots a stream) can be a wonderful training tool.

Keep in mind that she's a very little baby right now, but over the next few weeks her energy levels should skyrocket. Be prepared to play with her a LOT. She's also going to want to chew on everything, especially when she starts swapping out her baby teeth for the adult ones. Make sure anything you really can't stand getting chewed up is out of her reach, either behind a closed door or high enough up that she can't reach it or otherwise out of her reach. Power cords are emphatically included in this category! And you'll find that she's probably a little houdini who can wiggle into the unlikeliest places.

Find several chew toys that she likes, and swap them out every couple of weeks so she doesn't get bored with the same old thing. And I second tennis balls, as well as other toys made of the same material.

If you don't want her to sleep with you her entire life, then don't let her do it as a puppy. Keep in mind that you're establishing lifelong habits here in the first few months, both good and bad.

Take her to your vet (if you don't have one, ask around for recommendations) asap, have her looked over carefully for any current or potential problems. A good vet can often spot signs of congenital disorders very early, and advise you of treatments to correct or lessen any such problems. The vet will also be able to advise you about vaccination intervals and the most effective preventative measures for assorted parasites in your area (fleas, ticks, various worms...).

And she's a CUTIE!! Got a name for her yet?

We've named her Midna. And the next couple of weeks are going to be spent putting the cords behind things she can't wiggle behind or otherwise blocking off.

The plan is to have her be an outside dog full time, but that's mostly because we have a single wide trailer and as she gets bigger, she won't fit. So better to get her out sooner than later, but that won't mean we'll stay away from her. Considering the AC does NOTHING (>.<), she'll prolly be allowed in and out as she wants.

We found an old comforter and put it in the bathroom which is covered in newspaper right now. She's sleeping ^^
