  • Can I just say I love the mods here?

I just had a horrible experience with some moderators on another forum, where they made it pretty clear that my feelings didn't matter, that when both I and a mod had been rude, I was the only one expected to apologize, and that they'd just go ahead and delete things that didn't break the rules at all, just, you know, because the mods thought maybe I might have possibly meant something by them. But they weren't going to tell me about it, or give any hints about what was wrong with it, it's just *poof* gone. And that I was the one at fault for being upset about that. It was really horrible.

The mods here are so much more awesome. They actually give a damn about us. Even when you get a warning they're actually understanding that we're people with feelings who screw up and start flipping out for *reasons* and not just to cause trouble.

I appreciate that so very much, and I wish more forums had mods this great.

    Wow. Thank you!

It's nice to hear this sort of sentiment occasionally, and it's good to know someone who understands that we are absolutely not of the "us vs them" mentality here.

speaking of moderation...I just reported your post. I reported it to make sure all the mods saw it.

See? The report button is not just for bad stuff!

      XD Clever of you!

Honestly a while back when I had a big flipping-out breakdown and Ree PM'd me to make sure I was okay and ask if there was anything she could do really touched me. I've never been in a community where somebody who wasn't already a close friend would do that kind of thing, it was completely awesome.

And also, I gotta say, that it's probably the reason I'm still here. Given that I was having a bit of a breakdown, if I'd just gotten a "you're not allowed to post anymore" message without anything else, I probably would have freaked out and ragequit or something silly like that. And it's not like there would have been anything wrong with a mod *not* asking if I was okay, or anything, it was totally above and beyond.

Oh, yeah, this board is great. My first experience was a board that would go down in flames on a weekly basis, and once there was a huge ongoing argument about whether what you posted mattered. What I mean is that one person said, "Hey--there are real people behind screennames..." and the other didn't care 'cause it was "just the internet." There was "you don't know what you're talking about because you're not this race/ethnicity". There were political arguments. There were quotes of quotes of quotes of quotes, so much so that I got lost in threads. And get this: it was a board about haircare. Yes, you read that right. I have no idea what those mods were doing. I think they were hiding.

That's part of the reason Raps introduced the Fratching board. So that those of us who actively want debate on political and social topics have somewhere we can have it - but without bringing touchy subjects up here.

And that's why we mods divert topics to Fratching. To keep this board entirely friendly - or as much as possible.

We try to keep Fratching friendly as well: there, people are allowed (heck, encouraged) to disagree. But while disagreement with opinions is fine, you must act with respect towards the person.

Anyway.... spark? Thank you. It's great to hear that sort of thing.

In a way, I'm really glad that someone posted this topic before I did. Had it been my own brain to mouth/fingers filter that had typed it out, I would have gone all mushy, to the point of absurdity. Thank you. :P

I help administrate a forum or two elsewhere, and I know how hectic it can be to maintain that element of controlled friendly free environment. It's easy to just ban away your troubles when you have such an option, but only the wise know when to exercise the human element when it's a human problem at the fore-front of the dilemma.

Considering what else is out there, as per spark's early conundrum, (To which I apologize on behalf of those who can't/won't...) it's truly amazing to come across people who know that the title of "moderator" is second to the title of "Human Being."

I want to second the sentiments here. This forum is awesome. Even when I had a thread I started here locked (only one), the mod who did so gave good explanation why, and I appreciated that very much.

I absolutely agree, and feel a bit D'OH! that I didn't think of posting this myself. I originally came here from another "gripe about work" site that I don't visit anymore because people were getting really nasty with each other. It's a shame because I really enjoyed the site, but nobody was stepping in to stop the name-calling and general negativity. I tried to calm people down a couple of times but it wasn't working.

I really appreciate the occasional "Don't make me come over there!" from the mods on this board because it keeps things civil.

I'd like to chime in on the mod love.

I sure as hell was a brat when I first joined and probably the first couple of years I was here. But, thanks to mods who care and wanted to help me, I've been able to not only get along with others better, but also grow up better outside of the Internet.

I also came from a less moderated forum years ago, that was basically a free-for-all when it came to personal attacks, debates, and whatnot. Moderators and admin would join in bashing members. It was bad.

I'm a mod of a very small forum (about 40 members) and it feels like I'm herding cats sometimes. The thought of trying to be a mod of a forum this size frightens me. It's not an easy thing to keep a forum welcoming and friendly. I have nothing but the highest respect for our mods here. You are all doing an amazing job and I feel lucky to have found my way here.

You guys have NO idea how nice it is to hear this sometimes, especially lately.

Suffice it to say that modding has been a bit...um...'interesting' recently. It's very nice to occasionally get a kudos rather than a slam.

Posts like this totally make up for the negative side of being a mod. You guys rock so hard!!

                            Thank you!!!
