  • wth?

Okay, I don't really know where to put this one. It's not sucky, it's not a sighting, it's not a brain burp... it's just WEIRD!

So what happened was I was taking orders on the front counter register and this teenagers comes in (probably 16 or 17) and sets one of those webcam things that have a stand on the counter and starts adjusting it so that it faces my register/ order taking area. So basically, him and me in the frame of the camera.

Based on that and his age I'm thinking one of two possiblities:
    1. He is going to do some dumb teenager prank and have it filmed and put it on youtube.
    2. He is going to start yelling and screaming and then capture my reaction and put it on the internet claiming bad customer service.
    3. He is going to complain to get free food and then put it on the internet as a how to get free food video.

So I decided right then and there that I would not react and be really happy and nice no matter what he said to me. That way it would ruin the premise of two out of three of those ideas. I mean, basically that's what I do anyway, but I was on high alert because of the idea of being filmed.

(Before anyone says anything, no it is not illegal for him to film me. I could ask him to leave or get someone else to serve him, but that could have led to a confrontation and me looking bad on film, which is exactly what I wanted to avoid.)

Anyway, so what actually did happen, you might be wondering? NOTHING!
He ordered, he was super nice, and even when I had to clarify parts of his order he was beyond nice. It was actually better taking his order than most teenagers. He paid, I gave him his food, he picked up his camera, and sat down and ate. It was so anti-climatic.

But now, I'm really wondering what all that was about?
Does he just film himself doing everything? He really likes making boring youtube videos? He wanted to keep the memory of talking to a girl on film forever?
    So confusing.

Like I said though, not really sure where this one belongs.

Could have been for a school project, like 'film your average day.'

I would feel really bad for the teacher having to watch all those videos.

I go with the school project, some sort of documentary. Or he's a wanna be film maker, and you'll find your scene in some internet movie, just before the zombies come down the road, LOL

My first thought: he's filming it as a response to what you were expecting, the videos of people being dicks and screaming at the cashier and then the cashier screaming back. It'll be posted with "Watch what happens when you behave like a human being and are super-nice to them!"

That probably isn't actually the reason, but it'd be awesome if it were.

Where I work, filming and taking pictures isn't allowed without authorization. Unfortunately, some people don't follow that rule.

I'd go with school project too (although it would be nice if he asked you first).
I was working in retail a few jobs back, where I met a mentally handicapped lady who explained she'd just completed a course on how to do day-to-day stuff, housework, laundry, shopping. Nice lady.
I could see a video of how a straightforward transaction in a local shop worked being really useful for her course.

While not necessarily illegal, it is enough of a grey area that you could definitely have refused service or gotten someone else to ask him to leave. It also depends on what it was for, he would need your (or your employer's, or even your city/state's) permission for various uses...

Still, it sounds like it all went better than expected, so that's nice.

I once did something similar in grade school, but the camera I was using (a friend's) I swear must have been TV news surplus--that thing was HUGE.

That day involved a lot of public transit travel, which I was not allowed to film even though I had a note from the teacher (and I had also contacted the MBTA beforehand, they said fine and gave me a badge-thingy, transit cops said no ). So I used some stock subway clips, which turned out unintentionally hilarious as it was NYC footage and a friend got the idea to Photoshop the station names to match my own route...it would have been believable except the skyline/buildings near the stations didn't even remotely match the rest of the film (I think I got extra bonus points for creativity though).
