New Forum Activity: A CS Book Club!
    ----------------------------------------
Earlier this month, I discovered GoodReads. Since then, I've been playing around with the idea of a CS book club. I've spoken with Raps, and the mods, and haven't gotten any reasons not to do it. However, I have gotten reasons and approval to try.

So, I set up a private group on Goodreads for us. I haven't added books to the shelf, or set up a poll, not yet. Over on GoodReads, we'll maintain the history, the polls, etc.

Now, a major reason to use them is that they have quite a few sites they link to to help people find the books for dirt cheap, so that will help keep costs down for people who want to buy instead of borrow from friends or the library.

For now, the first order of business: If you want to participate, get on GoodReads, and join our group, and post a book suggestion over here. In a week, I'll set up a poll over on GoodReads, and we'll run that poll there to pick the book. A week later, we'll kick off the reading.

The only real rules we're going to have on suggestions are to avoid hard covers and difficult/impossible to find books. We want people to be able to participate, and not have to spend a lot of money to do so.

For now, I'll throw a few suggestions out there:
    • The Gunslinger, by Stephen King (Dark Tower, book 1)
    • Lord Foul's Bane, by Stephen R. Donaldson (The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, book 1)
    • The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Trilogy, book 1)
    • The Help, by Kathryn Stockett
    • The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, by Stieg Larsson
    • A Game of Thrones, by George R.R. Martin
    • Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card

I've tried to throw a bunch there from a variety of genres. I don't want to limit us to one specific genre, or even fiction/non-fiction. I would expect that what we're reading is going to vary a lot from month to month. So, if you're interested, sign up on GoodReads, and post a book choice here (the second part is optional, but I hope people will participate in helping us choose the next book).

Looking forward to seeing you there!

EDIT: I've made this into an actual poll over on GoodReads. What Should We Read?. I'd like to turn this thread into more discussion, and less individual title suggestion. You can vote on one of the books that are already there, or you can write a vote in and vote for it. The poll is open as of now, and closes as of March 15.

And yes, I'm being lazy. Already, I needed to copy 17 titles. I'd rather not copy another hundred

I'm gonna go ahead and say no to Gunslinger. Read it already and I was bored. Same with Donaldson. But I can skip those if others want to read them.

I suggest either Rosemary and Rue by Seanan MacGuire or Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
      Elantris by Brandon Sanderson
Redwall by Brian Jacques (JUST BECAUSE)
      Storm Front by Jim Butcher

First two are big books, but the very first one's something you just end up not being able to put down. Its simply....amazing.

I may be interested. So long as it doesn't turn into one of those "show 3 examples of the authors use of the theme of the wheel in the novel" type of book club. I also have read 3/4 of your suggestions already.

How about "Ready, Player One" by Ernest Cline
Or "His Majesty's Dragon" by Naomi Novik?

Lister: This is Crazy. Why are we talking about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone?
Cat: You're right. We're Nuts! This is an insane conversation....
Lister: She'll never leave Fred and we know it.

Oh, god, not Elantris. Anything else by him, but not Elantris. How about Mistborn, or The Way of Kings?

            Very good point, LOL.

WoK has frustrated me right now, LOL. Cannot believe the next installation's pushed back until late 2013. ><

If I wanted to get involved in an English class, that's what I'd suggest. In other words, I don't want that either. Don't worry too much about that happening

I've read most of those suggestions as well. I also wouldn't mind re-reading them, and getting discussion going about them, so I figured I'd post them in there. If people want a different book, that's fine, too.

Wish I had time for a book club, but alas I do not. If you have not read any of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (spelling) then I absolutely would back Lord Foul's Bane. I know a lot of people disagree, but in my opinion it is better then any of the Lotr books. I love the series. It is a bit darker/more mature then the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings..and a bit 'thicker' to get through..but absolutely worth it.

Awesome. I am actually already on Goodreads. I'll go find you over there. Great idea!

EDIT: Okay. I've put in a join request. If you look on my profile pic here, and then go over there, you'll recognize me.

Is the group limited to just the "read of the month" or can other threads talk about books in general? Also, you mentioned to avoid hardcovers and whatnot. does that apply to everything, or just the read of the month?

I'm in. Will do the gnashing and commenting on the poll when(if) approved.
And DaDairyDruid, I'm hoping something as voluntary as this will be pretty casual. If not, there's always Fratching!

I am this close to hunting him down and chaining him up in my basement until he gives me another book.

ETA: I'm also rather annoyed that it's not Highprince of War anymore. I know I'll get it later, but I want more Dalinar Kholin NOW!!!

*slaps DaDairyDruid soundly* sorry folks, I think he posted that before I'd fed him.

I'd like to suggest the following:

Feed and Deadline by Mira Grant (she has a third book, Blackout that comes out this June)
                        Random conversation:
Me: Okay..so I think I get why Zoro wears a bandana
                        DDD: Cuz it's cool

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

I'll second the Thomas Covenant series.

I'll add my own suggestion of Bruiser by Neal Shusterman. It's actually a YA novel but I think it's very good.

Also no time for a book club (and I have shelves of unread books looking reproachfully at me) but I second what Mytical says:

Covenant gets a little tiresome sometimes but everyone else in the series is AWESOME.

Yep, he is an anti-hero to be honest. Prissy, moans, hateful, spiteful...but then there is people like Saltheart Foamfollower which makes up for it.
