  • Vacation to Richmond, VA

Calling all from Richmond, VA or have traveled there. We are considering traveling from Ky to Richmond, VA for our vacation this year. I'm interested in what folks have to say for lodging. We'll be traveling as 2 adults, 1 teen, 1 pre-teen and 1 small dog. We'll be definitely looking for pet friendly!

I'm looking online, but so many times, the locals know the best deals. If we stay at a hotel, I definitely want interior doors. A pool is great, but not absolutely necessary. Must be clean (of course!) and not cost an arm and a leg. We might consider other options if there is a website that can show pictures of the accomodations.

I know when we traveled to Florida last year, we stayed with my sis and her family because lodging was so expensive where she lives. It wasn't until our next to last day there that we found the "cottages". Absolutely adorable! They were about the size of small, office type mobile homes, but the interiors were actually very homey looking. From the road, it looked like a small mobile home community. Their prices were actually affordable and we wished at that point we'd known about them before hand so we wouldn't have cramped my sister's house.

We'll probably not be looking to travel until sometime between late June and late July, just before school starts back here for the boys.

    Any suggestions??

I've lived in the Richmond area all of my life but honestly have no idea what the best deals on hotels are. I live here, why do I need a hotel?

But I can definitely help with what area of Richmond you would want to stay in, and depending on what you want to do here, what cool stuff there is to do, good places to eat, etc.

We have 2 boys, 15 and 11. Oldest is taking AP U.S. History this year, and loves it. We figured he'd love the history there in Richmond. I have a "co-worker" that lives in the area that has suggested a few things to do (I work at an extension of the company and she works at our headquarters). I'll gather my list and post them for you so that you could make some recommendations on what part of town to stay. We'll most likely drive in and back so traveling to do things won't be much of an issue.

      Thanks!

If you are on a history focused trip then you really should come by Williamsburg, it isn't too bad of a drive and, contrary to what a lot of visitors think, Colonial Williamsburg is free (the passes are just for select buildings and such but if you are only there for one day there is more than enough to see) so it is really worth it. If you do come down this way I would be more than happy to recommend some great places to eat.

I live just a couple minutes north of Richmond & like Aramika said I don't know much about the hotels because I live here. I will look into it though if you have an idea of the places you want to go. I will say that there are hotels here & there off 95 North & South that probably have some fairly decent deals if you are okay with being a little north or south of the city.

Thanks, folks. I'll see what we can look at as far as what to do in both places. Might be able to do both cities! Oldest is actually now going to be going with my best friend and her family (their youngest boy is in the same grade) and they are staying 3 nights in Va. and then taking a train to DC and then another into New York at the end of this month. Might be handy to vary up our trip a bit so that he doesn't see the same stuff twice.
