You may or may not know this, but I am an artist. It's more of a hobby than a job because...well...because I do it for fun and don't do a lot of pieces to sell mostly because the few classmates and aquaintences and such who wanted to commission me expected 5 star work, right now, for less than $2. Most didn't get past the talking stage and only one or two went the whole way through.
Because I draw/paint/sculpt/whatever for myself, I will occasionally design a character after myself. At the moment, I have 3 persona all with different hair color, eye color, personality types, and auras.
1) Kisa: An animal/human hybrd. My avatar resembles her most, but is not her because I'm too lazy to create and scan a good image of her.
2) Delilah: A fighter with a soft side. 100% human, but toughened by living in harsh conditions.
3) Rune: An introverted girl very much like me, but more coordinated and into swordplay.
Recently, I was asked by a friend of a friend if I could draw a colored image of my character "sitting pretty" whatever that means. Before getting into pricing and time frames, I asked which character. I can draw Rune anytime because she is me. Delilah I need to be calm for. Kisa is hardest for me to draw because I have to be in a very specific mindset to draw her correctly. I won't draw her half-assed.
Their reply blew my mind. "Oh IDK, can you do a combo of all of them?"
NO I MOST CERTAINLY CAN NOT!!! They are 3 different characters with totally different personalities and totally different backgrounds and totally different characteristics, many of which contradict each other. I can't even BEGIN to imagine a way to combine all 3 into one, solid, cohesive character. Then there's picking a background that all 3 characters could fit into.
I pretty much told him to pick one because mashing them together is not possible.
His answer? "Whoever is sexiest. My computer is busted so I need some material to use."
In the nicest way possible, I told him to f*** off. I'm not wasting my time slaving over a piece for you to use as porn. Bye bye!
A few years back, I had a classmate ask if she could use Kisa in her personal Manga during a discussion of our characters (we were both writers/ artists).
I asked for basic info of the plot and what part she would play.
She went on to outline a greek mythology type story with faries, unicorns, elves, and a phoenix embarking on a "Lord of the Rings" type journey to recover magical sataues to restore the peace or something. Kisa was going to be the damsel in distress who is constantly rescued by the main character and begins lusting after him.
Some BG on Kisa: she grew up alone as an outcast and quickly learned to fend for herself. Her power is infinate, there's no enemy she can't defeat, and her pride keeps her from asking for help. She will sooner lose an arm than come crying to some guy for help. She's one of those characters who always has that don't-talk-to-me-leave-me-the-fu**-alone look and only opens up to a select few who stick around through her attitude and such. She acts like she couldn't care less, but she still cares in her own way.
Because this part contradicted everything she is, I said no and explained why.
She basically said I was being stupid and that she isn't real so what does it matter if the part doesn't suit her.
In the end, she designed her own fox/human hybrid girl named Kitsune for the part and offered a half-hearted apology for pissing me off.
