  • I'm Never Shopping Here Again & Your Cheese Sign is Misleading

Yesterday, a customer had a coupon for a limit of 3 cheeses but only 1 of them was good for the coupon. It turned out that 2 of the cheeses were 2 ounces over the limit. She mentioned that there was a sign in front of the cheeses and I even showed her the ounce requirement on the coupon. I offered to get her the right ones but for some reason, she didn't want me to. I called a supervisor to help me out and the customer mentioned how the cheese sign was misleading and that she was never shopping at the store again. The supervisor apologized for the inconvenience and the customer went to the service desk next so I'm not sure what happened after that.

Hm... Take a bite from each one to bring it under the limit?

Every time I hear of an SC claiming they'll "never shop there again" in a post, I wish the person that posted it would pull out a contract stating as much and ask the SC to sign it. When the SC inevitably asked what the contract was and why they should sign it, the reply would be along the lines of getting it in writing that they are really never shopping there again. Me? Hate that line? Why yes, yes I do!

It's only misleading if you don't read it!

Sheesh, we always get customers complaining that our signs are "misleading". They have the exact item that's on sale (brand, size, etc.), quantity needed or limits, everything you could possibly need to know in a clear, easy-to-read font. Yet they're "misleading".
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

we get that a lot, we will clearance price the most unpopular colours of items so because we might have 100 left of every colour but purple and then have 500 purples. So we put a sign up the says " Regular price $30.99 - Down to $19.99 PURPLE ONLY!"

The purple only can be in capitals, bolded, underlined and customers STILL bitch about it.

Every person at my store claiming that they'll never shop here again is right back at the store 24 hours later. How is this possible????

Because for millions of Americans, NOT shopping at a certain store is really punishing themselves. They have already integrated this certain store into their errand route and it kills them to try and skip it on the next day's route. And in my area, WHERE THE HELL ELSE WOULD THEY GO??? The county I live in and it's surrounding areas are not known for all the many different things you can do with your time, so...people go to my store because they really don't have a choice. There's nothing else they CAN do.

I'm really hoping that they went to the desk to sign what BrenDAnn suggests...

Sheesh, we always get customers complaining that our signs are "misleading".
Back at BoutiqueGrocery, we did have signs that even *I* felt were misleading, and we got a few customer complaints about them -- I told the customers "Tell the manager about them. Please! His name is ___. They don't listen to us, you gotta tell them!" (OK, maybe I just thought that last sentence >_>) -- Specifically, they LOVED to post nice eye-catching signs that proclaimed that a given item was "SPECIAL"...thus, invariably causing it to sell better for that week. Every so often, a custy would realize -- at the register -- that "on special" did NOT automatically mean "ON SALE"/discounted in any way, shape, or form. It was just something the SM used to draw attention to an item he wanted to sell a lot of. I REALLY hated it whenever they posted those damn signs. I gave up complaining about it to management myself after one too many recitations of "Don't worry about it. It's not false advertising; the sign doesn't say anything about the price being any different."

Anyone who ever moaned to me about a "misleading" or "incorrect" sign would simply be told to contact the State Measures and Weights department, since they were responsible for making sure we were in compliance with all laws and regulations on store signage (and always passed our audits) since when you come right down to it, it's THEM who decide if something was truly misleading.

Of course this never SATISFIED any SCs who just wanted free stuff or to win a dispute with Da Man (tm) , but it did give us a ready-made way to pawn them off and get back to work.

I'm generally willing to forgive customers when they say a sign is "misleading", because there is a degree of subjectivity in that statement, and sometimes even I have to admit they have a point. If they say a sign is "false advertising", then I will gladly use all the powers of my English major to figure out its true meaning. Very occasionally, it's actually what they want, even when it probably isn't what management wanted the sign to say. Most of the time, the customer is just too stupid to read the sign properly.
