  • Jerk I dealt with recently

I had a customer call in to see about converting his local move to a long distance move. I ran a quote and advised him it would cost him approximately four thousand dollars.

The guy hit the roof. He advised he had gotten a quote for under three grand. I look it up. He had gotten it several months ago. I advised him that our quotes are only good for seven days. He started demanding a manager. I did try to discount as much as I could, even getting a supervisor. We couldn't go as low as what we had done before.

In the meantime, the jerk in question is going on about bait and switch, and how he has a friend high up in the company. I finally ended up giving it to the department above me.

If you have a friend in management, then why didn't you have them hook you up?

This guy was an EW and a SC to the max.

The classic tried and tested "Bait And Switch" response.

Yes, you baited to have him drag his feet for a few months and then switch the price when he finally made up his mind on where he was going to move to.

Me: Sounds like a job for Gravekeeper!
    Fiancee: What?!
    Me: Nevermind.

*facepalm* Hey I got a quote back in 1989, that is still good right? I know the boss..Kevin. Yeah Keith is a swell guy, we go grab a beer all the time. I was telling your boss Kenny yesterday that if he makes a quote he should stick by it. So..I am going to get that price? Right?

Umm, nobody's commented on the fact that the move went from local to long distance. Long distance = more gas, more labor, more everything = higher quote. DUH?

Not to mention gas costs more than it did when he got the earlier quote.

Yes, the move went from local to long distance, but the way I read the OP he got a quote for long distance of 3k .. I could have read it wrong.

Either way everybody with more the two brain cells realizes that prices and quotes are only good for so long. Oh wait..SC's often don't have the required two brain cells..never mind.

That's one of the things that frosts me the most--people who expect prices never to change.

I used to work with a woman who had a good way of dealing with this. We used to get a lot of gripes on the cost of real estate ads going up. When she got one of these, she would ask the caller, "When was the last time you lowered your rent?"

They'd grumble but then they'd shut up.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

Our prices go up on the 2nd of January every year. There's usually outcry in the press for weeks beforehand about how dare we charge more, despite the fact that energy prices have soared and government subsidies have declined. 99.99% of the time the fares will not change again all year, because of the amount of work involved in getting them sorted out in the first place.

So of course, every week we get someone saying "Have they gone up again? It wasn't that much last time..."

I have one worse than that. In the same day in our office we received two pieces of post

                      1) significant client's letter saying that they expect us to be enjoying a reduction in material prices so therefore expect us to drop our prices 5%

                      2) significant material supplier's letter saying that they were having to increase prices due to increased costs by around 5% and here was our new price list
I am so SO glad I was not present for this. There would have been an unpleasant duct tape incident. - Joi

That really makes me wonder WHY they thought your costs would be going down...? Unless, of course, they had access to information your company did not..

As far as I know they are just chancers who think they deserve a reduction in price. Reality stays far far away from that client. I think someone was just trying to write this letter and had to come up with some sort of reason why it was justified.
