  • I've got a tip for you...

This happened many years ago, when i was still new to customer service. I felt the need to put this story out there because the memory of it still makes me want to smash things.

So, one evening at work, this woman comes in with a couple kids in tow and walks up to the registers. Our cashier was apparently on an extended voyage on their failboat and was nowhere to be seen. The common practice at that time was for everyone who could cashier to know the number assigned to the register, so i jumped up to the front to help her.
Initially everything was going fine, until she went to pay with her card. I hand the slip to her to sign. Instant catbuttface. "ugh, you expect a tip?" I explained to her that no, i really don't expect a tip, but all the credit card slips print a space for one. Then she gives me this sneer and says "I've got a tip for you...keep working hard" followed by another sneer.
Up to this point I have been nothing but friendly and helpful to her, and I managed to keep a fake smile on even after this. She walked off to find a table, and I head for the back alley for a smoke to cool off cause I'm about ready to blow. Along the way I throw a punch at the door jam comming out of the scully, just to let off physical stress.

After I cool off some, I come back in and get back to work. Our store set up allowed people to walk up and look directly into the kitchen. This lady comes up, looks at me with this malicious expression and says gleefully "I saw you punch the wall back there." I just looked at her and said "Yup." At this point her self preservation instinct must have kicked in cause her face went from evil to scared shitless and she quickstepped back to her table.

I could have been more professional, but nothing sets off my temper like uncalled for rudeness.

Good. Maybe she'll learn a lesson in not being a bitch.

Or not. Either way, I really can't blame you, and she shouldn't either. Just because we wear nametags does not mean we are no longer human and deserve abuse.

Too bad it was the door and not her face. People like her make me sick. Reminds me of one time this bitch at Subway was throwing a fit because our fountain drink machine was out of order and she didn't want to pay the extra 30 cents for a bottled drink. (Manager's orders) Ended up giving it to her for the fountain drink price just to shut her up but I also told her exactly what I thought of her in the process. At that point I didn't even care if she sent in a complaint.

Right after that I went into a Incredible Hulk blind rage and ripped the big stainless steel prep table out from against the wall about a foot and then slammed it back into the wall. I was so mad. Bitch was still standing at the register when I did it so she must have heard it. My co worker was also scared shitless.

Where do these people come from?!?

Glad you scared her. Maybe she thought twice before opening her mouth after that. Probably not, but I like wishful thinking.

As much as I hated my stints at McDonald's, the Campus Fast Food place and Kroger, those places did teach me that the people working there are human and deserve to be treated as such.

From the same group as people who think retail or food service isn't "a real job". Though they'd happily receive money you were paid from that "fake" job, if you had to pay them.

I think I got that "I got a tip for you..." type line once, and all I did was shrug and say "thanks for your advice". Considering that they happily took up table space for two hours of lunchtime and only paid $8 total for two people thanks to Mad Coupon Skillz . . .

. . . I'm not sure their advice would land me in any better position. Considering at the time I was working a restaurant and I found them later manning the drive-through at a Wendy's. I'd like to say I was classy and didn't rub it in their faces. Truth is, I didn't realize where I knew them from until I was halfway home.

Good tip for you, then: Let it roll off your back and forget about it. It's the second worst thing you can do to pay their inconsiderate mouth back.

Where were you unprofessional? I ain't seeing it.

You were polite to her and took a break to let off steam.
Then someone who wasn't even fucking involved stuck her nose in to what... call you out for it? Talk down to you?

Yet you still kept your cool while making it clear that this wasn't a topic for debate.

Mmmm delicious cow. Eating too much cow is why my thighs rub together when I walk.

Thankfully, the worst "tip" I ever got was an angry rejected guy and a dirty diaper.

When I was younger, I was much more tempermental and didn't react to anyone saying something I didn't like well. Nowadays, I take all kinds of mental abuse from my mentally deranged coworkers.
