  • Way to turn something that's supposed to be fun...

..., good time, and relaxing, into something that is a complete clusterfuck.

    I've talked about this here

    http://www.customerssuck.com/board/s...ad.php?t=77734

Last night was my week to run the local VFW poker tournament. It didn't go well.

We have a bounty system. For $1 you get a ticket (you don't have to buy a ticket if you don't want one). If you knock someone out you get their ticket. If you get knocked out you lose your ticket. Even if you have 10 tickets, and get knocked out, you only lose 1. Thus, there can be people out of the tournament, but are still up for the bounty cash. We do the drawing at the final table. If there's more than $40 in the pot we do 2 drawings.

Last night there were 2 drawings.

We got to the final table (10 players left) right as the clock announced a 10 min break. So I start getting people moved to the final table. That's when the clamor started for me to do the drawing. These people weren't in the tournament, but still had tickets. I was trying to get people moved over, so I tried to ignore them, but after a bit, it was getting annoying.

I get everyone moved over, and people are still bitching for me to do the drawing. Finally with a min. left on the break clock, I decide, since it looked like everyone is there, to do the drawing.

I pause the clock, so no game time is used, and I have someone who didn't have a ticket, pull the first winning #. I get the ticket and announce the #.

No one is listening. They are all chatting away.

I say the # louder, and they are FINALLY listening up. No one had the #, so I ask the person to draw another ticket. We have a winner. We do the second drawing, and get another winner. Both are very happy with the $20 they each won.

I start back up the clock. As I do one player comes up to me very pissed. He had the first winning #, that went unclaimed. He's getting very pissed with me, because I didn't make sure he was back. He was outside smoking. Right then the clock chimes, and I tell the players to "shuffle up and deal. Blinds are 2k and 4k." He goes to sit down and play. I was all like WTF with that.

There was also a "sit and go" table going on. These people lost out of the main event, but are playing for a free drink. I was keeping an eye on it, and one of the players started in telling me how I'm supposed to do things (in his opinion). He keeps going on and on. I finally get away from it, and do some organizing, just so I don't have to hear any more.

Players lose out. Finally he lost out. I have to get him signed out, so I can give him his $5 gift certificate. As he walks up to me he starts going off on me again, as he signs out. He keeps going. He keeps berating me for not being considerate of the smokers. I tell him that I thought that everyone was there. He keeps going after me.

Finally I have enough. I tell him " Fine. The next time I'm here I'll give you $20 out of my own pocket to end this (I didn't have it on me at the time)." He finally shuts up, and leaves.

At this point my mind is made up - I don't want to do this anymore. I'm sick and tired of this shit going on, almost, every time I run it. I can count on 1 hand the # of times, over the last 4 years I've been doing this, when there wasn't something fucked up not going on. I'm stressed out from working 7 days of the week. I don't need any more stress outside of work.

I will tell the main people running this of my decision, to hopefully, get some one else to run it. I'm finished. I probably won't be playing there anymore, either (at least not for a long while) because it isn't any fun anymore.

    There. I feel better.

Can't say I blame you. They need to have a policy: Must be present to win--meaning IN THE ROOM. Either that, or make an announcement outside for the smokers. Sounds like a lot of trouble though. He knew there was going to be a drawing, he should have stayed inside.

Sounds like stress you don't need. You could use that time to wind down and rest.

This is the reason a friend of mine stopped running the local poker tournaments. Too much asshatery and bitching from the players. Friend was the 4th organiser they had run off within 2 years. The joke is on the players though, their reputation is so bad no one will run their area even if paid so they have to travel up to 2-3 hours away to play in a certain tourney anymore. Idiots screwed themselves royally.

Um, I'm a smoker - when ever I have a ticket for a drawing - I do a very simple thing - I give my ticket to someone I trust and have them claim the prize if it is called while I'm out smoking. easy peasy.
Too bad a bitchy few take the fun out of volunteering for you - 'cause otherwise it sounds like it would be a fun way to spend an evening.

          Good news.

I talked to the main people who run the tournament. They stopped in and filled up their gas, and got their bait for fishing. The gal asked me what happened. So I told her. Then I dropped the bomb, I no longer want to run it.

          She understood completely.

So I'm out of the poker tournament director business.

What a weight off my shoulders.
