  • Really didn't need this right now (injury)

On Sunday, I demonstrated my phenomenal talent for klutziness yet again. While walking across a street to get breakfast, I tripped on my own two feet and slammed into the sidewalk. I skinned my left forefinger and my right ankle, bruised my left knee...and severely jammed my right middle and ring fingers. Right now, three of the fingers on my right hand are splinted and taped tightly, and I've been keeping an ice pack on them. When I changed the tape, I saw that several of the joints were jammed and bruised, turning a lovely shade of purple.

Honestly, I probably shouldn't be trying to use my right hand. I should tape all four fingers together and keep them still for a week. But if I can't sew, I'll go nuts. I'm unemployed, fighting a bad depressive episode, and facing the loss of several friends as they move across the country. I *need* to sew. And fortunately, I can still sew even with half my right hand taped up.

It's just frustrating. I was starting to get a fair number of sales on Etsy, and I need to keep that momentum going. It normally takes me about 6 hours to sew one pony. Now it takes two days, with breaks to ice my hand in between. I should be grateful that I don't appear to have broken anything, that I didn't have to go to the ER, etc. But mostly I'm just frustrated/

Crap, Joi, timing really is everything, isn't it! Try to take it as easy as you can on the hand, so as not to aggravate your injuries, but I can see why you can't stop sewing altogether. Hang in there!

      Forgot to update this!

It looks like I actually broke two fingers on my right hand, instead of just jamming them like I thought. I had the fingers taped and splinted for the first week, but didn't want to risk atrophy, so I spent the second week reducing the splints and bandaging til my fingers were just taped individually. I might have taken the "splints" (ok, so they were popsicle sticks) off too soon, as my fingers are a bit crooked. The middle and ring fingers bend away from each other slightly (which, granted, does make the Vulcan salute easier), and when I lay my hand flat on the table, the middle knuckles of each finger no longer touch the table.

The good news is, I can close my hand again, and mobility seems to be slowly returning. I don't know if I'll get the full range of mobility back, but I can sew, type, and paint, so I'm ok with that.

You should, at the very least, go to the emergency room & have your fingers looked at. Better safe than sorry.

          Yes, dear--get an x-ray. I'm afraid they'll heal crooked!

Bit too late for that, sadly. The break happened a month ago, so not much to be done at this point. Plus, I don't have health insurance or money to cover any sort of treatment. And sometimes fingers heal crooked even WITH a doctor's attention!
