  • EW Runs to the media when told 'no'.

Oi vey. I get a perverse sense of fun from reading articles and browsing the comments sections ...
Found this story on one of the news sites sunny NZ - Pregnant woman asked a store if she could use their loo. Worker said no due to the policy enforced by the manager, and this store has even (as far as I saw) made a list of nearby places with publicly avaliable loos.

So PW goes crying to the media that they said no.

    Same here

And now, while I can't comment on pregnant women needing to pee every 5 minutes (or feeling like they have to pee), the closest I have come is suffering from several UTI's consecutively. I really did feel like I had to pee all the time. And despite having those same UTI's, I was not an EW about it.

Best comment I've seen so far though is this (word-for-word, and no it's not me, I do not make bad grammar errors):

I am due any day now and know where all the public bathrooms are when I travel into the city. I in now way expect special treatment. Women who do gives pregnant women a bad name. There are so many many kind things I see the "average" person do that is within their control. While waiting for a public restroom people have offered for me to go before them. People open doors for me, help me pick stuff off the ground if something falls or offer a kind word. I expect NONE of this but am GRATEFUL when it happens. We need to be more appreciative as a whole! It seems the more appreciative I am the more wonderful interactions I have had with strangers!
And for the idiot about halfway down who said that it was "elegal" (his spelling, not mine), I don't know much about NZ discrimination law, but it is NOT discrimination to refuse a pregnant woman access to a bathroom if the general public are also being denied access.

That's different to the way things are over here... In the UK, a pregnant woman is entitled by law to pee wherever and whenever she likes. Even in a policeman's helmet, should she request it for that purpose.

Yeah I heard about that from Real People I think.

Kinda makes sense why they included it in The IT crowd PSA.

Uh, no she's not. The 'peeing in the helmet' is a complete urban myth, I can assure you I never let a pregnant woman pee in my hat...

•In the UK, a pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants (4%)
as one of the laws that is still "in the book" though they also mention dying in the house of parliament or eating minced pies at christmas as illegal

It's not that it's written into law - there's no law that states it's allowed.

There is also no offence of public urination, anyone who is caught faces prosecution under Section 5 of Public Order Act (A person is guilty of an offence if (s)he uses...disorderly behaviour ... within the hearing of sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress thereby).

It is entirely reasonable that a pregnant woman could use her pregnancy as a defence against S.5 prosecution. That doesn't however give her the right to urinate in a police officer helmet.

I liked what one commentator (#198 "due respect") pointed out... that the store can refuse on grounds of safety. Cos if the customer had been injured she'd have demanded compensation, no?

good point. Stick it right back at the city council that this is *their* responsibility and not the responsibility of private businesses.
