    As a luddite here...

I've got ALOT of audio books on my computer and often drive down to my parents house which is almost a 2 hour drive round trip.

What kinda device would work best for me to load the books on to so that I can play them in my car?

I have a 2007 Nissian Sentra, which has an aux port, a CD player, and a radio.

If you need more info then that I'll see what I can come up with an answer for.

Do you have a CD-burner on your PC? If so you can create an audio CD. If you don't have appropriate software on your PC you can use something like ImgBurn:

Instructions on using it to create an audio-CD:

I do not have a CD burner, but I'd also like to consider something that I can put headphones in/on and listen to it while in the yard.

What format are your audiobooks in? MP3? WMA? AAC? WAV? ...
Will the CD player play MP3 (or other encodings) CDs? Look real close at the face plate for logos/text.

Several versions of Windows Media Player will burn an ordinary audio CD from MP3/WMA files. (A friend uses WMP, I'm not familiar with it as it craps out if the library has more than 2500 albums)

Most of them are MP3 format. and still CD burning doesn't really work for me, was thinking more Ipod or something similar.

If the AUX port on your car stereo is a mini headphone jack, any MP3 will work to pipe it into the car stereo. The USB style MP3 players are dirt cheap these days.

Another option is to also get a low power FM transmitter to connect to the MP3 player. You then tune your stereo to the chosen frequency and Voilà.

I didn't even read the thread. I went straight to the end to see what Irv posted.

I have a cheap MP3 player (read: not Apple) that has a MicroSDHC chip in it.

If your computer has the little slots for camera cards, you could load the books onto the chip (just like copying and pasting files from one drive to another).

Then get a cheap cable to run from the player to the port in the car.

(I've got two 16 GB chips worth of music, one chip filled with complete albums, the other half-filled with just selected songs... the playlist is roughly 78 hours of music and growing)

From my research I can tell you that Ipod has the best storage to cost ratio. (Ipod classic 160GB for $249) If you don't need much space you might be able to find something cheaper, although GameStop now sells refurbish Ipods for a good price. I picked up a 2GB old model shuffle for $25, including extended warranty. You can get the new model (with the buttons) for about $25 without the warranty.

I have been out of the consumer electronics game for a bit, but here is what I could scrounge up quickly:

Your cheapest option would be to pick up an internal DVD burner (I don't think you can actually buy a drive that only does CDs any more) for under $20, and a portable CD player for use when out and about. If your car's CD player supports MP3s, all the better, you can get a portable one that does the same.

The down side is obviously that you are a confirmed Luddite, and thus are probably not happy with installing a CD burner in your computer.

Trading $$ for ease of use would obviously be an MP3 player and a mini jack cable to go into your aux port in the car. The advantages are obviously that it's easier, you only need to buy one thing, and most MP3 Players are simply drag and drop for transferring audio.

I would probably suggest looking at the Sansa devices from SanDisk. Far from top of the line, but really, who care?
                              http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16855125126
$30 for a 2 gig player that has a display (cheaper ones tend to not have a display), and is expandable via Mico SD card, which you should pay a bit less than $1 per Gig for.

You might not even need to expand the memory, depending on how many audio books you want to carry around with you at a time (2 gigs of reasonable quality audio books is a good amount)

I personally recommend buying from NewEgg, mainly because most of the brick and mortar stores are not going to actually have non-top of the line players.
