  • SEVEN @#$#%ING TEETH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is not an icon angry enough to express how I feel right now.

Just got back from the dentist. That bad tooth I said I had earlier? Has to go. That huge honking hole in there is from inner decay, and the tooth basically collapsed on itself. Dentist said he's surprised I'm *not* having any pain, as bad as the mess is. It's just barely above the bone line, and with the way that it is, a crown would be little to zero chance of saving it.

I have a referral for an oral surgeon. No idea when this is going to take place. (Though it will have to be soon, before infection sets in) It's probably going to run about $500. For one little tooth. (Extraction and anesthesia are not cheap. Hell yes I'm getting knocked out for this; I don't think I could bear it otherwise.) This will be Number Seven that I lose. At the rate I seem to be going, I'm going to end up like my dad, who has almost none of his natural teeth left.

It's not like I'm mainlining sugar straight from the package here. I was giving up a lot of junk even before I had the crisis last year. (Can't stomach a lot of things like I used to, for one thing.)

Don't worry, hugs are flameproof. Thanks.

I feel like just holing up somewhere and not coming out for a long, long while. <----- I'm the horse.

I don't know how much comfort this is, but dental hygiene is largely genetic. Some people can eat nothing but sugar and have perfect teeth, while others eat the perfect diet and still lose teeth. It means that it's probably not your fault, even if you do have to deal with the shitty outcome of it all.

Wow, that sucks. At least it will be out and out of your worry zone though, right?

And the genetic thing is true; my husband hadn't seen a dentist in 10 years, doesn't floss, just went to one last week, zero cavities, teeth look great. I on the other hand brush three times a day, floss every night, use mouthwash, go to the dentist faithfully twice a year, and I average one-two cavities a year and a badly receding gumline because of a condition that affects my enamel and gums.

Huh. I didn't know about teeth genetics. Interesting.
            But..yeah...OW. Munny going buh-bye! I hate that.

Yeah, I inherited bad gums from my grandfather. My teeth? They're in great shape. Problem is, I'll most likely have those perfectly fine teeth fall out due to my bad gums. So far, flossing, Listerine, and a sonicare toothbrush are holding off the inevitable, but when you're gums start receding while you're still in high school, there's only so much you can do.

Unfortunately, it truly is Genes R Us. I have fillings in virtually every tooth except the very front ones, plus I've had 5 that have needed crowns (only been able to do 3 so far, but the dentist started with the worst and worked forward, so the 2 left should be OK for a while ... he was a great dentist and I was very, very sorry to lose him when I moved).

Probably not much comfort, as others have said, but ...

Same thing with eyes ... mom's eyes are far better than mine, in spite of her 78 years and my 57 ... she's always said it's because I read too much but I've had 3 optometrists tell me that's got nothing to do with it -- I just inherited lousy eyes from somebody, LOL.

much hugs to you. I lost three teeth last year and got a root canal. I don't like the idea of losing more of my teeth.

Never heard about the teeth genetics though =/. I believe I blame my mom's side for the bad dental ><

If teeth are largely genetic, then how come my brother has near-perfect teeth and I got all the shit? We both have the same parents...

Same thing with eyesight. Mine sucks, his is fine. Allergies: I got 'em all. What does he have? Nada. I don't know if he's ever had chronic depression, but I have that, plus the ADD, and most likely Asperger's as well (not yet been officially diagnosed but I took a test and I pinged damn near every single item on it).

I have to say, I'm feeling pretty bitter right now.

Two people can pop out several kids and they will all be different. Not everybody inherits the crappy stuff.

I know how you feel about the teeth. I've had a lot of work done and I owe the dentist about a bazillion dollars. My dental insurance pays shit...last thing he did was $124 and they paid $25.

Teeth are not only genetic, but they're notably gender-biased.

I have a similar issue: the women on my mother's side of the family have a tendency towards bad enamel. Of my mother's siblings, the 1 brother has great teeth, the 2 older girls have good teeth, and the two youngest have crap teeth.

My mother is the youngest. I got crap teeth (why couldn't I take after dad on that issue?) and my mouth looks like a war zone. Every filling I've ever had just made things worse, too. I got lucky, however, in that I have almost no pain issues from the problem, but I know it's affecting my health. >_<

My brother, on the other hand, took crap care of his teeth and even did things that are known to weaken them, and he's only ever had 2 fillings. Lucky jerk.

                        ^-.-^

I had my wisdom teeth out and something went screwy where the gums didn't heal correctly. So I had to go to a gum specialist to cut and re-sculpt the gum-line lest I get deep infections. So, because my orthodontist screwed up, we ended up paying $500 because insurance only covered ~$70.

Oh, and insurance doesn't cover night guards (like a mouth guard) at all, and those run $500 too, and I need one as I clench my jaw hard at night apparently.

I freaking hate dealing with mouth issues, insurance (even if you have it) sucks for it, and prices for a 20 minute, local anesthesia are ridiculous! $500 for 20 minutes and just numbing of the gum.

                          So I share your rage!

Are you planning on having a fake tooth put in? I've heard that technology for... erm, installing? fake teeth into the gums has drastically improved. I have no idea how much money it costs though, probably worse than a crown or root canal.

I used to have terrible issues with my jaw that I had to research myself to figure out were due to clenching (neither my health teacher nor my dentist had any idea, despite my finding the cause in a pamphlet in his office >_< ).

I actually trained myself out of it by putting the outside edges of my tongue just barely between my teeth. It doesn't help as much overnight, but it still helps. And it's free. And it works to change the behavior, not just make it more difficult.

I want to get implants. I want to have every last bit of original tooth yanked out (or what's left of them, anyway) and just replace the whole lot. They've never been straight and always overcrowded and the wisdom teeth all came in impacted and ruined themselves and the teeth in front of them.

I have good bones, but there's a lot of work that would have to be done before they could even figure out if I'm eligible. And I'm phobic. >_<

Because you don't both inherit the exact same genes. The only people who do are identical twins. I could go into a lot more technical detail, but that's it in a nutshell.
