  • Oh Mcdonald's, why must you do this to me?

I've been on a huge exercise binge lately. I've also tried to cut my calorie intake to 1500 calories or less per day.

Now, McDonald's has recently released their delicious Chocolate Chip Mocha Frappe. I'm addicted to the things, but I have to limit myself immensely due to the fact that the things are 580 calories for a SMALL. (GAH!) They also have a ton of sugar and other horrible stuff in them.

What drives me crazy is that, according to McDonald's website, if you remove the Caramel Frappe mix from the drink, it cuts all the calories and sugar in half. Since I love the things and would rather have a 280 calorie snack than a 580 calorie liquid meal, I've tried several times to order the drink without the caramel frappe mix. For some reason, though, every McDonald's I've gone to is completely confused and frazzled over the idea of taking out the caramel frappe mix. I've gotten answers of, "My ingredients screen says it only comes with mocha, ice, and chocolate chips" to "the only one that comes with chocolate chips is the Mocha Frappe."

I'm so frustrated, I'm going to try and call the McDonald's customer service number tomorrow and ask them how the heck I can order this frappe without the horrendously fattening caramel frappe mix.

P.S. If you haven't tried one of the chocolate chip frappes yet (and are able to add a ton of calories to your diet for the day), I suggest trying one. They're so yummy!

Could you make one at home? I do sometimes with milk (2%), espresso, ice, cocoa powder, sweetener. You could add a teaspoon of chocolate chips. I don't know about the caramel. That seems confusing, as the name of the drink says nothing about caramel.

I've seen those posters in the window. It sounds good, but I've avoided them, mainly because I'm not a big coffee fan, so mocha flavors have to be well balanced or chocolate heavy or I don't like it.

When I was still working in Indianapolis, there was a Steak and Shake a block away. We'd sometimes go to Happy Hour. A vanilla and mocha Side by Side shake is a beautiful thing.

I'd have to look up a recipe, but I suppose that would be a better choice. I wonder how expensive the ingredients would be, and how time consuming it is?

And yes, the item is simply called a Chocolate Chip Mocha Frappe. I'm not sure if it automatically comes with the caramel frappe mix, or if it's a separate item. All I know is, every time I've mentioned it, the employees become confused.

I can't stand coffee, and if I drink more than a few sips of hot coffee I get nauseous. However, the Mocha iced coffees from McDonald's don't seem to bother me, and actually taste quite good.

I'd never drink their hot coffee, though. Blegh.

If you have a rocket blender, put in the cup 5 ice cubes. Add 1 T cocoa powder, 2 T sweetener of your choice. In a separate cup mix 1 or 2 shots espresso with 1/4 cup milk* and dump that in. Add as much milk as you need to hit the top of the ice. Drop in some chocolate chips, screw on the cap, and blend the heck out of it. *You need to cool the espresso (or strong coffee--whatever you can make) in the milk or it will melt your ice cubes and dilute it. I suppose you could use a big blender. I dunno; I very rarely use mine for anything. I usually use my own premixed chocolate milk mix, which is always one part cocoa to 2 parts whatever sweeteners I'm into. I like a blend of sugar, stevia, and sugar twin (sodium saccharine). Even if you used all sugar, 2 tablespoons have a total of 90 calories, and 2% milk has maybe 50 per half cup. Cocoa is pretty negligible. I have no idea how many calories chocolate chips have. I prefer not to know.

I have really high metabolism so I can consume up to 3k calories a day without gaining weight. I also don't exercise. If I'm not busy, then I just laying around sleeping or spending time on the computer. I haven't been working since mid June and all I have legit done when I'm not running errands is eat and sleep.

But the day my metabolism fails me is the day my body will betray me. I should have a couple years left in me. Hopefully.

Have you tried printing out the information and bringing it in? That usually helps a place when they see it's the company's own website.

                I entirely understand.

I've pretty much have had to give up on DQ for the same reasons - what I like, even in size small, has more calories than I want to eat. If I do have some, it's on a day I did Zumba where the added calories won't matter so much.

As for McD - have you considered printing up the website's page? If they balk you can show them... "O look your own company suggested it. So what's the problem here?"

Our roomie was hooked on whatever the mochadeathbomb was a couple years ago, so for christmas I got her a Mr Frappe. Money leak solved.

You could have your own, and make any version of coffee frappe you like, up to and including using the sugarless syrups instead of the sugar based ones.

I am lucky and unlucky to be a Super Taster. So the taste of coffee at all makes me sick, I once had a freind give me the most over flavored frappe they had ever had. The kind of sweet that makes your throat burn, and it still tasted bitter as hell to me. Plus, sweet enough to burn. I thought I would die from the retching.

The best thing is that even though I LOVE sweet things, too much sweet gets to the painfully sweet stage very early for me. So I can't induldge in Frapicinos and milkshakes too often no matter how good they might taste.

My current obsession is Cold Stone Cremeary Milk'n'Cookies Shake Gotta Have it size. But I can only have a few sips before it hurts. So as delicious as it is, I feel no drive to get another one for weeks on end.

Down side is that salad tastes like poison to me. Lettuce is so very bitter, and I'm allergic to dressing.

So did you call the customer service line?

Considering that the last time I set foot inside McD's I couldn't get the guy behind the register to even understand me (most of the staff couldn't speak English >_< ) and couldn't get the manager to understand why I wanted a receipt and how not putting the paper that he admitted they had would be a better idea than just ignoring it because "it was too much trouble," I'm not too surprised that they have trouble with the concept.

Okay, I called the customer service line. The guy on the phone said that it's impossible to take out the caramel frappe mix because "That's what makes it a caramel frappe, and without it, it would just be ice (?)" So basically, I'd have to ask the franchise if they would make me a mocha frappe with chocolate chips. That way, the caramel base wouldn't be used. He said it would be up to the franchise, though.

It's irritating that the McDonald's site has the caramel and mocha listed together. It makes it seem like you have a choice of taking one of them out, like any other ingredient. Instead, I have to order something completely different, with an added ingredient (chocolate chips).

Hina? Thank you for that. Had never heard of it, but I know what you mean, I can't touch even the sweetest coffee, it tastes like someone burnt the flavor of bitter and ground it up.

Did the self diagnosis, and eeeeeyup. I'm a supertaster. XD Kinda cool to know, wonder if its tagged in with my sense of smell....I can pick up faint scents amazingly well. <.<

In that vein - when $tarbucks first started their canned drinks, I tried one and was hooked. My lovely wife started to read off the ingredients one day and I had to stuff my fingers in my ears and "lalala" her. I KNEW why it was so good - same reason almost anything is - huge amounts of fat and sugar! Sadly my ignorance is bliss phase came to an end when Consumer Reports or some such had an article about a whole slew of canned coffee drinks and I read it inadvertently.
