I was just discussing the voice of the automated operator at a company I just calling and he mentioned 2 things about his stepmonster ...

She worked for decades as an operator for the various iterations of Bell/AT&T from basic operator to top dog ..... and is also one of the voices of the automated AT&T operator system

And she was the management person responsible for the automation of the operator system, and the laying off of thousands of operators and is seriously disliked by most of the operators left at AT&T

[and she is pretty nasty on her own at a personal level. We have cordially hated each other for 25 years]

wow. So while she got tons of people laid off she managed to keep her job I'm assuming.

Not only that but... if he calls in he gets to listen to her voice ?

Yup.

From what I understand, she worked her way up in status from operator to management in the department. When Bell/AT&T decided to computer automate so fewer operators could be maintained for the tricky stuff the vox system couldn't look up they used current operator staff to record the various messages and laid off however many operators they didn't need.

Apparently even though retired she is still brought back occasionally as she is apparently a specialist in the systems they use. Go figure. Moral is study hard and be evil?
