My mother after camping with some of her grown up girls guides for a couple days and hearing them talk about it, wants to read...

    50 shades of grey.

No, my mother is not reading this, it is not allowed, it is banned.

Actually to be fair her reaction would probably be hilarious.

My thoughts exactly. My friend bought me that book for my birthday a week ago. He was going to read me the raunchy parts and replace the characters' names with my parents' names. *shudder* I came home with the book, my mom saw it, and she said "You'll have to let me borrow that when you're finished with it so I can see what the hype is about. " Umm....I don't even want to read it. I think I'd be mortified if she ever read it.

I found the whole thing very insulting. But...the books were entertaining enough. I really don't get why everyone is making such a big deal though. There much better romance literature and erotica out there. Better written with better characters, and a better understanding of their subject matter.

Still, really hard books to put down....

The hype is mostly just hype.

If you want to read a book where the pages literally burst into flame - read Anne Rice's "The Taming of Sleeping Beauty" series (she writes it as A.N. Roquelaure)

It makes Shades of Grey look like Dr Seuss

I also bought it just to see what the hype was about. Its still sat there on my kindle unread.

I did mention it to my kids that I'd bought it to see what the hype was about.. they just rolled their eyes in a "mums being her usual mad self again" way

Part of the hype around 50 Shades of Grey is that it was orginally a fan fiction for Twilight. The author changed the names and the setting.

              My mom read it.

She didn't tell me until afterward. Her reaction was basically "what reasonable woman would let any man do that to her!?"

I informed her that the author has no experience in the BDSM community, and got all her info off Wikipedia. Also that it was a Twilight fanfic with names and setting changed. And she didn't read Twilight, so why the hell would she read THAT?

She said she'd heard so much about it, she wanted to read it.

I facepalmed. Audibly, apparently, because mom asked me what just happened.

              I facepalmed again.

This. Agree 100%. Talk about a hot book.

So definitely not a 'read in bed' book?

Instead of 50 Shades of Puke, try Lady Chatterley's Lover. Quality and *classic* erotica - doesn't get much better than that.

If you have to base your stuff off of Twilight fanfiction (and shitty fanfiction at that), odds are very high that the hyped object is going to suck very badly.

I read some reviews of those books on Amazon. I won't be reading them. Not so much because of the subject matter, but because of how poorly they're apparently written.

Whenever there's an overhyped book out, I don't bother buying it; if I'm semi-interested, I check it out from the library. The vast majority of the time, said book isn't worth the hype, and I'm glad I didn't waste my money.

So far the only book series that I've found that are worth the hype (and worth buying) are Harry Potter and Discworld. (Hmm, wouldn't that make an interesting crossover... )

When I browsed Amazon for it for the kindle, it was very cheap or I wouldn't have bothered

I've not been to the library for a long time now. I got a kindle as it was light & easy to hold, I'd been having trouble holding books for a while & paperbacks got a bit ill treated because of that

I may get around to reading the first few pages when I've got through the ever increasing list of books I have already though

Wait, it's erotica? Okay, that explains a whole lot. It also explains why there's over 1000 holds (1124 to be precise) at our local county library; they have 330 copies of the book.
                            Random conversation:
Me: Okay..so I think I get why Zoro wears a bandana
                            DDD: Cuz it's cool

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

I bought the first book just because. I can't finish it. I just can't. I'm a little more than halfway through it and it's just so poorly written I can't stand it.
