  • ESL = Gang Signs?

Forgive any typos and what not this was written at the end of the very long shift on the day this occurred. This is my first time posting here I believe but probably not the last.

A Convince store clerk here with a bit of a story time. I work in a fairly busy C-store on graveyard. We have a pretty high population of hearing impaired customers in my area so I took an ASL (American sign language) at the local community college a few years back, while I was working at a dollar store in the same area because I hate not being able to converse well with my customers. Most if not all of the hearing impaired customers sign and they know that I also sign so they try to come in when I work.

One of my regulars came in near the end of my shift and we struck up a conversation (in ASL) while the lady behind them watched and seemed appalled by it. I thought it was just because it was taking longer than normal (I sign very well but am by no means fluent so sometimes it takes me a few 'please repeat that's' before I get what's being said.). I finished up with my regular then helped the lady behind her. Next thing I know she's asking to speak to my manager and reaming HIM because and I quote 'Your clerk was just throwing gang signs at a lady for five minutes!'. My Manager of course attempted to explain to the woman that it was all ASL and not at all gang related at all.

Well this lady was having none of it. I suppose it could have been that several of the abbreviated signs that we used look very close to gang signs but she swore up and down it was all gang related.

I swear people in my neighborhood are getting crazier by the day. I've been working at my store for nearly six months now and have never had another customer even look twice while I help a hearing impaired customer via ASL even when I was in plain cloths and off the clock (which happens just about every time I venture into the store on my days off, to the point I've taught most of my co-workers the most common requests the regulars have just so I don't get a phone all asking me to come translate ever again.).

My ASL is really rusty but I can think of one sign I'd give her.

I used to know a bit of ASL, but can still remember a few very common signs (Thank You, I'm Sorry, Yes, and some of the letters.)

If I had been there when that woman was screaming about gang signs I would've gone off on her for being a sheltered twit and an ignorant bitch. Seriously? She thinks that "gangsters" (IE punks!) just stand there for 5 minutes throwing their hands around at each other? REALLY!?

It's commendable of you to learn how to sign, on your own time too!

That woman just has too much time on her hands, though, picking on people. I bet she is one of those people who tell other people having a conversation in another language, "why don't you learn English! Dont' you know this country people speak English and you make it harder for the native speakers here!" and she proably go after kids who have tattoos. What a fucking cunt.
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

            You're two for two, depechemodefan.

If she had ranted at the customer about this, she'd probably also be very upset that she's "being ignored" by the "gang member".

What about the deaf 3 year old who was told by his preschool he can't sign his name because it violates the school gun policy?

I commend you for learning how to sign. Did you find a do-it-yourself course? I'd like to learn some, as well as Spanish, but have been tested and found to have no aptitude for foreign language.

That lady's sheer level of stupidity I think puts her in the running for the dumbest customer I've ever read about here!

It does remind me of when I worked at a particular theme park featuring a mouse, we were taught when directing people to point with the whole hand or the first and 2nd fingers, as in some cultures pointing with one finger is considered rude.

I heard about that! But I thought they were trying to force him to change his name because the sign violates the school "NO REFERENCE TO WEAPONS" policy.

I have to ask, how do they teach the kids about wars? o.O

Oh my God...I had a similar experience in high school.

My high school took all of the deaf kids from the Fresno, Clovis, and Madera districts. So we had a high population of deaf kids. I started learning sign so I could communicate better.

Well, I finally graduate high school. For the ceremony, my walking partner is a good friend who is deaf. So we finish, and started talking in sign language, and one lady remarked, "wow, you two are being very rude. Why don't you attempt to talk aloud instead of being sneaky freaks?" And when told he couldn't hear, it became, "why why doesn't he go to a special school?"

                    ...
Yeah. My partner was deaf since birth. I only ever heard him verbally say "No" and my name. No use talking aloud. Ugh.

Same here. It involves a single digit.

I swear I think some people shouldn't let their brains wander off out of their sights. They're too little to be left roaming about to their own devices.

We have a thread going on over at Fratching about that very topic. You're more than welcome to join the conversation on that (as is everyone else here.)

                        Sometimes you can't fix stupid.

No matter how innocent your behavior is, someone is always going to be stupid enough to translate it as a "threat".

Talk to someone in another verbal language - someone bitches that you're not using the "official" language, or that you must be talking about them.
Talk to someone in sign and apparently it's now a "gang" thing?

seriously. some people... I'm surprised they even know how to breathe.

Talasar, if it helps... right now I'm imagining Abby from NCIS ripping that SC a new one. In both spoken and sign.

My sister encountered that while grocery shopping once. Some old bitch went off on a couple of Middle Eastern ladies who were talking to each other in their native tongue. Sis told the old bat off and apologized to the two ladies. This kind of thing is hard for my sister as she is very self-conscious about drawing attention to herself, so I was kinda proud of her.

People like that seriously need a reality check. Kids with special needs (including the deaf) do not necessarily need a segregated education. They can read and write just like everyone else thank you!

(We actually talked about this heavily in my topic last semester. There's three ways kids with special needs can be accomodated in my state: mainstreaming with accomodations (also known as an integrated or inclusive classroom), special class/special unit within the school (more for the severely autistic/intellectually disabled) or a special school, but a special school should really be a last resort)

Also to the OP, congrats for learning sign language. I'm planning on doing that at some point when I have the money ( the course is like $500 ) since I'm going to be a special education teacher.
