  • Wide awake and full of rage

I mentioned in my first post that my job is a little unique, so let's just say I do "stuff" for company X.
Anyway, one night last week I was fast asleep when my mobile starts ringing. Rather than throwing it out of the window like a normal person and going back to sleep, I answered it, as at that point my nephew was imminent and I thought it would be my brother in full "over-excited time to hand out the cigars" mode.

We all know I wouldn't be posting if it was.

SC: Hi, This is SC. I emailed you this week about "some issue which I could easily have dealt with myself, but thought I'd bother you with" (I'm paraphrasing here) . Can you clarify your lengthy and well explained response?

My full attention is on the time displayed on my phone at this point, rather than her fascinating subject matter. I realize from the ensuing silence that I'm expected to respond.

ME: Well, it would be easier to explain if I was in front of my computer. Could it wait until office hours?

That's my polite, avoiding getting fired, way of saying " What the fuck lady? It's the middle of the fucking night"

SC: Oh, you're not in the office.

I know for a fact from our previous conversations that she knows I'm based on the opposite side of the world to her.

ME: No I'm not. You do know there's a 12 hour time difference between us?

SC: Oh yes, but I spoke to the office here, and asked to speak to you, so they put me through. ( Figure out that thought process - You know it's the middle of the night, but you expect me to be at work - I still don't get it)

Combo-idiocy folks. SC aided and abetted by co-workers in another country.

SC: I could put my questions in an email...

Me: That's a great idea (Probably used her allocation for the decade). I am going to try to get back to sleep now, so i shall say goodnight. (Hammering the point home I know, but only metaphorically, rather than with an actual hammer, so she got off lightly)

On a positive note, my nephew turned up a few days later. His first toy, courtesy of me, a plush C'thulhu. Try explaining that to two non-geek new parents - the more you talk, the greater their expressions of horror. It's what HP would have wanted.

Not on the clock, I'd have said, "Email me the concerns, I'm going back to sleep. Night..." and hung up. And then the next business day, I'd have filed a complaint to my HR about coworkers putting idiots through to my phone during non-business (for me) hours.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

Why the hell does a customer have your home/cell number?! Nobody at my work has mine exept my friends, my mom, and my department manager and they know only to call if someone is bleeding out of their eyes. It'll be a cold day in hell before I'd even THINK about letting a customer have my number.

Kilgore_Trout did say the office the sc called patched her through to Kilgore_Trout, so really it's the fault of that office. Dimwits.

            And congrats on the nephew!

OK, I'm going to assume the cell phone was a company-issued one, because if it was a personal cell, my response would be more suited to fratching.

still, that office was out of line. I'm going to err on the side of caution regarding the customer, and assume the other office suggested putting the customer through.

I'm going to guess that she annoyed the office enough that they patched her through so they wouldn't have to talk to her anymore.

Im hoping that office got a talking to about forwarding calls in the middle of YOUR night. Thats BS.

I route my company desk phone to my personal mobile for my own convenience when I'm out of the office. It saves me having to hang around in the office when I have to take calls with other timezones after normal office hours. My company number is in my email signature, right next to the office location, so if you find one, you have to see the other. This is the first time its come back to bite me in the ass though.

SC is sucky as she seemed to think time would magically adjust if she got connected by someone else. She didn't ask them to help her out, only to speak to me.

CWs in her country should know better - after the email i sent them, I doubt I'll hear from them again.

I had an SC call me one night (8 pm ish) on my home phone (same time zone) after I had just fallen into bed with the flu and a large dose of Nyquil. He was bugging me about getting something done that my boss had nixed previously.

The Nyquil kicked in and I fell asleep while he was ranting and raving trying to brow beat me.

He had the audacity to complain to my boss about my falling asleep and my bad customer service the next day.

After a bit of investigating, I found out how he even got my number in the first place. A good friend of mine worked for him and had my home number written in his Rolodex (yeah, it was some years ago). Friend came to work the next day to my name open in the Rolodex. Boss must have snooped on his desk.

Rolodex card was destroyed that day.

It does suck that OP had a call forwarded to him in the middle of the night, but some positions, especially those that deal with international markets in vastly different time zones, require a person to be "on call" at all sorts of odd hours.

Still, negative marks to the SC for being inconsiderate in the first place.

                          ohhhh how cute!

and... now i'm imagining the REAL one darkening the doorstep of the midnight caller.

Yes that is true. However usually the person who is 'on call' knows about it before hand.
