  • Stargate newbie question

I think I've finally gotten over my resentment that Stargate and its various incarnations stayed on the air after Farscape got cancelled. So I think I'm going to start watching it.

My main question is this: is it necessary to watch the original movie before I pick up the series? Or can I start with Stargate season 1?

Personally I do not think it is absolutely essential. It might answer some questions you might have, but its not critical. That is one persons opinion

I've seen every single episode of both SG-1 and Atlantis and have never seen the original movie, and everything made sense to me. It would explain a couple things at the very beginning, but if you keep watching it makes sense anyways.

        Without spoiling the movie:

You would know from having seen the movie:

1: The Egyptian Gods are real and really alien parasites / symbionts that live inside peoples brains and control them. Their godlike power is really superior Technology. - Some of that Technology is the Stargate which is a device that opens stable wormholes between other Stargates allowing for nearly instant travel across many light years.

2: These aliens took humans from Earth and took them to all sorts of various planets.

3: They use Pyramid shaped space ships, the Pyramids on Earth are really landing structures for them.

4: Dr. Daniel Jackson theorized much of the Gods being Aliens part, but of course he is laughed out of his profession as an archaeologist for being a "nutty loon"

5: Ra is dead, this made a power Vacuum.

You may now watch SG1 - The first episode more or less picks up after the movie, but its fairly straight forward in figuring out what happened.

The storyline for Stargate Atlantis does not begin until the end of SG1 Season 7 - Start of SG1 season 8. At that point alternate episodes if you want continuity (there are a few crossover plots, but they mostly stick to themselves)

I liked it as well! I watched the movie first to get a taste of SG, and then watched SG-1. I really liked the way that the movie had one take on things, and then the way the same ideas were adapted for the series. I don't think you miss a lot if you don't watch the movie first, but it does give some background. And I did rather like James Spader

To answer the question, no. You do not need to see the original movie to watch SG-1. The most you would get out of the movie is some character backgrounds and relationships. Everything else will be found in the series itself.

And it's funny, shortly after I finished watching SG-1, the movie was broadcast on cable. I figured I would watch it fro some nostalgia and the first thing that popped into my head as I was watching it was "was the movie really this cheesy?"

you don't have to watch season 1 or the movie to 'get it' so to speak, but you should watch the first episodes of season 1 for the intro of Sam, its worth it.

I started watching SG-1 before I tried to watch the movie. Of course when the disc is scratched and you can't watch more then 10 minutes before the scratch affects it it's frustrating.
I'd like to eventually watch the movie but for now I'm content with all 10 seasons of SG-1 (I own I believe 4 seasons of Atlantis as well).

I started with the movie, and am up to season 3. If it is available, why not watch it? I think watching the movie first adds to the whole experience.

Strictly speaking oyu don't have to, but some of the detail stuf early on won't make sense if you don't watch it.

ok stargate sg1 is hands down my favorite tv show period. first off Farscape only getting 4 seasons has nothing to do with stargate as far as I know. However you will get two seasons with ben browder and a season and a half of claudia black.

I have all ten seasons, all three movies, 4 of atlantis, the board game and the rpg rule book.

I say watch the movie it fills in a lot of detail and it's pretty decent. now the first season has some episodes that aren't the best but the show gets better each season and is really something special by the end.

While the movie isn't necessary, it does fill in some of the details. I think it would be a good way to kick it off.

I've seen every episode of SG1, Atlantis, and Universe. And hey, I really liked Universe, too, and was so pissed when they cancelled it after season 2! SG1 is by far the best of the franchise, though.

I've also seen one episode of Infinity and it was....weird and awkward....I still kind of want to see the rest of that (non-canon) series, though, just to see how awful the rest of it was. I've also read the (also non-canon) Bill McKay books and they were a snore... the last two were okayish, but the first three were awfully boring and not worth the read imho.

I thought SG1 jumped the shark towards the end. They fell victim to the 'the opponent has to get continually tougher' train of thought. While they thought this was a good thing, I saw it as just getting stupid. I'd have rather had more interesting plots with a bit of intrigue than what they ended up doing. There was a lot they could have done with exploration and other threats.

I haven't seen the last couple of movies that supposedly ended the storyline because by that time I'd pretty much lost interest in the show.

The BBB Syndrome (Bigger Badder Better), it is the death of a lot of good shows. Yet somehow there are still a billion versions of Power Rangers..and if you looked up BBB Syndrome they would have a picture of the Power Rangers right there. Anyhow, I digress. It is also the death of a lot of tabletop roleplaying games. I mean once you stop a god (or dragon) from destroying the world (ravaging a town) THEN what? Clearing out a rust monster just doesn't seem to be a challenge. Dang it there I go off on a tangent again...

I thought the same thing. I loved the show..and the enemies were interesting..however once the Ori came..it just lost .. something. The solution was a Deuce Ex Machina also..the writers wrote themselves into a corner and had to come up with a lame solution. Ok..I will quit rambling before I do too much spoiling..
