Ok doke. I know a very nice girl, my age, but so innocent she seems younger. She's the one I mentioned that her 14YO son suddenly turned on her one day, said he never wanted to see her again, and moved-in with his dad who's NEVER paid a cent of support.
She was renting a house. The rent was paid to landlord X, however she recently began getting notices from the homeowner that she was behind on rent. Turns-out landlord X was not giving the rent to homeowner Y. Long story short, the house ended-up getting foreclosed on and she was forced to move.
She found a nice apartment. The apartment owner was anxious to close on it FAST. Although the carpet was nasty and the fridge needed to be replaced, the apartment owner promised it would all be taken care of if she closed today. So she signed the lease.
Bit of a mistake.
She went to move-in; the carpet and fridge had been replaced, but then realizes that there is a MASSIVE roach infestation. As in, she opens the closet door and 30 scramble for cover. Then the 'new' fridge stopped working. The apartment owner has promised that someone is coming to take care of the roaches, and he will replace the fridge. 1-session of spraying didn't work; I'm betting the roaches scurry to another apartment then back after the poison is gone. She has NO FOOD out; everything is in sealed ziplocks in tupperware containers. She hasn't brought any furniture or clothing beyond what she might need for the day, because she doesn't want her stuff to get infested - this means she's still paying for her storage unit. She's TERRIFIED of roaches, but has no other place to go, can't afford a hotel, etc. Her husband has been sleeping at his work.
So in short, for 2-weeks they haven't yet been able to live in an apartment that they've paid rent for. Someone offered her another (clean) apartment for less than what she's paying now, but her landlord said she's not getting out of the lease or he's taking her to court. But HE'S not holding up his end by providing a habitable apartment.
As luck would have it, we happened to be talking about this when a customer passed by and said she couldn't help but overhear, but that she's an assistant with (insert important law firm here) and managed to give friend some contact information for a pro-bono housing lawyer and told her exactly what she needs to do. Unfortunately, even the assistant admitted that she's pretty trapped in the lease having signed-in and having accepted the apartment 'as is' but told her she has a fighting chance if she can prove the apartment is uninhabitable and that she hasn't been getting what she paid for. What luck huh, that such a knowledgable person would happen along at just the right time?
