So lately there's been a lot of talk about having good female characters in fiction, in my neck of the woods at least. And I'm quick to point out when a character is bad male or female. So I'm going to take a moment and talk about a show that gets it right.

The story is in the year 2077 8 terrorists were about to be executed but instead they trigger a time travel device sending themselves back in time, supposed to be 6 years but ends up being 65. Along with them comes supercop. Kiera Cameron. This is the absolute perfect example of how to write a female lead character, and she definitely is the lead. She is smart, funny, and can either be tough or compassionate.

She's human and she's a great actress. Further there are three other female characters featured heavily, one a cop, another a terrorist and a third a housewife. All of them written well.

And it gets better, never once ever do they make fun of men or women. The men in the show are shown incredibly well too, her partner backs her up when needed and isn't afraid to take the lead as well.

The terrorists are smart and sophisticated not goofy or over done. You can even understand their side. Last she has realistic emotions especially considering there's a chance she'll never get to see her husband or son again and it hurts her but it doesn't stop her from doing her job.
Interviewer: What is your greatest weakness?
Me: I expect competence from my coworkers.

One of my favorite female lead characters of all time was Samantha Cain/Charlie Baltimore in "The Long Kiss Goodnight," played brilliantly by Geena Davis. And while many of the minor characters in the movie were either overdone or underdone, the main characters were done justice by Samuel L. Jackson, Brian Cox, and Craig Bierko, and even some well done roles by the young Yvonne Zima and the pre-CSI:NY Melina Kanakaredes.

Still one of my all-time favorite action movies.

Syfy are showing this over here. I started to watch it - but no subtitles. I can't hear a word. It looks really nice though - the future stuff looks cool. I guess I will wait till the dvd.
