  • So I just got fired.

I asked why and the GM said that he doesnt know why. He said that on all his years in the industry he has never been asked to fire someone for no reason like he was today and then he offered to write me a recommendation letter.

He says he thought I was doing a good job and he doesnt know why the owners wanted me gone.

My manager said she was given a choice between her or me when she tried to defend me. She offered me a recommendation letter too.

I dont know what we are going to do now. Me working full time is the only reason we have been able to survive.

I'm so, so sorry to hear that. Here's hoping your GM's recommendation letter will help you get something bigger and better.

That's awful, especially since nobody seems to know the reason (if there is one) behind this. I hope something better comes your way very soon.

        I'm so sorry, Moirae.

You say the owners wanted you gone - if it's a family business, I generally find in these cases that the job is wanted for another family member, and that's all the reason they need *sighs*

Since you were apparently fired without cause you should have no problem getting unemployment if you're in the US,

That really sucks. At least you should qualify for unemployment. It's better than nothing. Recommendation letters are nice, too. (As a manager I like them, because on an application I'm interested in we have to check X number of references, and a good recommendation letter saves me a phone call in this process. And that puts me in a good mood, which is a plus for that candidate.)

I know it's going to sound strange, but I'd actually want to find out why you were fired as well. While you may qualify for unemployment, if they fired you for a certain reason, then you may have a case for unfair dismissal.

especially since they even told the manager "you or her" ... to me that speaks of a personal issue rather than a professional one.

although, looking at your previous threads ... they were also guilty of refusing to give you any proof of the gripes they had to prevent you finding out if it was true or not, not to mention doctoring time cards even though they knew it was illegal.

it might be worth bringing to the labor board

Definately an ace to keep up the sleeve should the ex-employer try to fight Moirae's unemployment application.

Get this... last Friday this woman sent such a nasty email to the guest services manager that he had what everyone believes to be a heart attack due to anger. He's in the hospital.

And yesterday, after I was fired, she put his job and my job up on craigslist (as well as four others).

People like that deserve to be the ones on the receiving end of nasty emails, and THEY should be the ones getting fired.

I wish I could be there the day she gets her comeuppance.

Really hope your coworker recovers quickly.

Also since she posted 6 jobs, does that mean 6 people got fired?

i seriously think you have a good case against them for not only stealing wages (illegal time-card editing) but also creating a hostile work environment. actually pretty much everyone there has a good case, including those who quit to save themselves or those who were similarly fired.

i really hope you do have the energy to bring this up with the labor board / unemployment agency.

Not according to the net. Seems that, if it isn't against the constitution in some way (prejudice due to race, color, pregnancy, etc), there is no way I can level a hostile work environment claim against them.

I really really hate this work at will stuff.

Do check with your labor board anyway - worst thing that could happen would be that they agree.
More laws than the Constitution apply when it comes to workers' rights. Especially when the employer apparently does illegal stuff (as in tampering with timecards).
