  • Geeky wedding halp!

So a friend of mine is getting married in December. And chances are that I may not be able to attend said wedding for a number of reasons. I am still sending them a congratulatory card and gift however.

And here's my question: while I have a gift for them (some stuff for their new marital home ), I really want to make them a card.

While I'm not an excellent artist by any means, I am willing to give drawing a try.

So can anyone help me with some geeky motifs to include on a wedding card? I'm trying to stray away from the traditional frilly lace and bows since I'm friends with the groom, not the bride.

ETA: In terms of motifs and whatnot, I am willing to give stamping and wet embossing a try (with the ink, not raised images)

There are a TON of artists on Etsy, some of whom are willing to work with you on a card design. And they tend to be pretty reasonably priced.

Some geeky-love motifs that I've seen:

Take two iconic characters from a show (not necessarily a romantic pair) and make them into a couple, with a catch phrase from the show as the text. Examples include Daleks, Borg, Ewoks, little grey men, or gremlins.

Re-create a famous love scene or wedding scene from a movie, show, or book. Legend of the Seeker, Star Wars, and Fifth Element are a few that come to mind.

Put the couple in a setting from their favourite pop-culture reference. Princess Bride, Doctor Who, Star Trek, or Stargate might be a few options.

If they're RPG'rs or LARP'rs, put their characters in a montage with items from their wedding theme and maybe a few 20-sided dice.

If they love video games, maybe turn them into their favourite video game characters.

Or, just create a wedding scene, and throw geeky references in - various characters as guests, decorations from games and movies, a pile of rulebooks holding up one side of the altar, or various mathematical or chemical formulae forming the border (make sure they all reference either fundamental building blocks of the universe, or cohesion, or binding factors, to stick with the romance/love/wedding thing).

    Hope that helps!

I'm an artist, and can do up a nice digital portrait for you, no charge. I'm still practicing the digital stuff, and I don't think I'm allowed to link so soon after registering, but if you look up ZapDraws on Deviantart, my gallery has some portraits of people done as fantasy characters. I'd be happy to help.

You can make a border that uses dice shapes in its workings.
I have a...thing. Wanna see it?

I might do the dice shapes Nurian thanks.

I'm also thinking of the idea of keeping a "rough" wedding theme, but maybe doing some elements of it 8-bit style i.e. having a wedding cake done as minecraft blocks.

Do a Song of Ice & Fire-themed card!

I'm thinking more Gamer/anime geek than TV geek.

Now if it was a card for my boyfriend, then yeah sure, I'd do a Game of Thrones one (he's now reading the books).

Just a fun suggestion here..the scene from Fifth Element where Leeloo jumps from the ledge into the cab...with the caption "She took the plunge.." and on the inside where she is inside the cab with him "because she knew you'd be there to catch her." or something to that effect.
Engaged to the amazing Marmalady. She is my Silver Dragon, shining as bright as the sun. I her Black Dragon (though good honestly), dark as night..fierce and strong.

                  Cute.

I might keep that as my verse. I actually hadn't thought about what I was going to say, so that works out nicely.

I'm thinking in terms of motifs, I'm thinking that if I go with that verse suggested, I might do a role reversal of the original Super Mario Bros games, where Mario jumps on the flagpole at the end of each level. Instead, I might see if I can find an image of Princess Peach and have her "jumping" down the flagpole instead, with her "groom" standing at the bottom ready to catch her.

I've made my Christmas cards the last few years, as well as other cards for different occasions. I used to do card making with my Gramma when I was younger and have gotten back into it. You can get stamps custom made, if you want to go that way. The company I get some of mine from is www.rstamp.com. Now they are in Canada and I'm not actually sure if they ship outside of Canada but its worth a shot. Otherwise, I like all the ideas the others have given you. A suggestion, get extra supplies and make a few practice cards to make sure you get the design the way you want, without ruining it.

OT: Does anybody know if we're doing the card exchange again? Wasn't the sign ups usually around this time of year?

I think I have an idea that should work nicely.

                      I'm thinking 8-bit "pixels".

My inspiration? The foam "photo" mounts that I've seen in the local Kmart (not related to the US store). They are 5mm x 5mm double-sided "tape" blocks. All I'd need to do would be to cover one side in ultrafine glitter, then stick the other side down. And glitter isn't that expensive. (Yes I'm doing it in a tray )

I'm thinking I might do an 8-bit "cake" with some stars on it. I might even do the stars a la Super Mario Bros.

Funnily enough, the local Kmart has had more stuff there that I want/need than the craft shop!

That sounds fun. Lotta love goes into a project like that. My previous comment on the first page just got cleared, but I'd be happy to help out with some art. I rarely pass up a chance for good karma, especially if it's geeky.
