  • Connect disc drive to laptop?

Without thinking (and realizing it) I bought a laptop without a disc drive, and The Sims 3 and a couple of expansions. I have a non functioning laptop that has a working disc drive. It's cheaper to get The Sims in store than d/l online (I'm surprised too!) . I'd rather not return what I bought(don't worry, I haven't opened them and I hate returning things), so I'd like to use that other disc drive(it's from a Dell Insparon whose h/d died) or find out if the store copy has a d/l code in the box. I mean, kaspersky did.

It's a nice little machine, it just doesn't have a disc drive! If I had noticed it before I'd picked it out (and paid and brought it home), then I probably would have sprung for a higher price tag.

18 bucks for a USB CD drive at dealextreme:

36 for one that does DVD:

You might be able to do a bit eBay

    Another option:
If you have your machine on a network with other machines, another option would be drive sharing... set another machine to allow it's optical drive to be used by other machines on the network.
There's no such thing as a stupid question... just stupid people.

As long as you can find the proper drivers for the optical drive, you should (theoretically) be able to put the drive from the old laptop directly into the new one.

Doesn't Sims 3 need the disc in while playing?

Can you physically take the ODD out? Just wondering... cos another option is to use cables & power supplies for the old ODD and hook it up to the new one. although the caveat is that the hookups may cost more than getting a new external ODD.

for example, I have a cable set that provides connection & power to both SATA & PATA drives (or external ODDs if they're either format). Then I just plug it into the computer via usb. mainly i use it to connect to drives without cases but it can also work for an internal desktop DVD player (ODD). dunno if it woudl work for a laptop one tho.

Viola - While your new Laptop +doesn't currently have an optical drive, you'll need to check if it has the space for one (an expansion bay) - If it does, does it have the same connectors (IDE/SATA) as your old Laptop?. Simplest and easiest (although requires spending money) would be a USB External drive, which I beleive Its Me linked (Haven't checked the links).

Kogato - Yes, normally you need the game disc in the drive, as an anti-piracy measure makes it check the disc. This can be circumvented but as I'm not sure on the legality I'm not going into this - its not piracy, as Viola has brought a legitimate copy, but it may be against the EULA to circumvent such measures.
