  • Interesting birth gift...

So a friend of mine has recently had a baby boy. Very cute I might add.

Today she had a look through the bag she received from the hospital. Among the usual supply of gifts you get from the hospital, there were....

    2 boxes of condoms.

I guess they really want to ensure you're protected against future babies!

Hahaha! My best friend received some in her Bounty Bag as well, but it was the mid-pregnancy one!

Wait, they give you those sort of things mid-pregnancy now?

I could understand maybe a onesie, hat, mittens and a blanket maybe....but condoms?

I know hey! As she said, "Its a bit too late, that horse has well and truly bolted."
I remember getting them as well as some other things in the take-home bag when I had my two girls, but that was a little while away.

It's amazing the number of people who think you can't get pregnant again right after giving birth.
"I look at the stars. It's a clear night and the Milky Way seems so near. That's where I'll be going soon. "We are all star stuff." I suddenly remember Delenn's line from Joe's script. Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

well i was going to point out that normally women shouldn't be having sex right away for at least a month... but according to what i read online, many women apparently feel very ready at just 2-3 weeks. (YMMV I guess).

So in a way it's not that strange of a gift. Plus, although breastfeeding does provide a natural form of birth control, it shouldn't be considered infallible.

QFT. Over here, hospital also recommend abstinence for the first 8 weeks, but should that fail, condoms are the most appriopriate form of contraceptive. The body would have a hard time dealing with another pregnancy so quickly, and other contraceptives like birth control pills are not recommended due to the risk of hormones getting in the breast milk.
A theory states that if anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for, it will be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

Another theory states that this has already happened.

                        Pretty much this.

If you can't keep away from each other until her body is back to ship shape, then a condom is pretty much a requirement. And since most people likely won't even be thinking along those lines, sticking a few in the take-home bag are a good reminder.

The friend I mentioned in the OP has been told by the hospital to abstain for a lot longer than 8 weeks since she had a C-section. (planned) Although she mentioned that she's not planning on having any more.

I suspect that once she stops breastfeeding, she's going to go on some form of hormonal contraceptive.

I thought the condom stuff was a bit tacky. But, hey, still a good idea, just not shoved in my bag.
