read the instructions for a tv dinner that say:
    1. put in for two minutes
    2. open
    3. stir
    4. put in for two more minutes

and then just put it in for 4 minutes?

Or 4... forget it for an hour... 2... answer the phone... 1... get distracted, go to bed and start over in the morning...

Or put towels in the washer yesterday and forget to put them in the dryer.

I will only whack a microwaveable meal without following the instructions when I've learned that following the instructions overcooks, undercooks, leaves it cold or scaldingly hot. Our microwave is an awkward setting and the trial-and-error means more than a few spoiled meals... >.<

It depends on which dinner I'm making. Sometimes i just put it on for 5 minutes and stir after, sometimes I follow the instructions.

Though when I follow instructions it goes kind of like this:
1: take dinner out of fridge
          2: Read instructions
          3: Go to microwave
          4: Read instructions
          5: Open microwave
6: Check instructions before putting meal in microwave
          7: Punch in time
8: Take meal out, check instructions, put meal back.
          9: Shut Door
10:Turn on and wait for beep
          11: Take out and stir
          12: check instructions
          13= Put in microwave
14= Type in time and turn on.

Sometimes if i have a second of the same meal in the freezer I will refer to that meal. If you don't cook it in the box, then I just hold the instructions at all times.

I read my quilt patterns at least 3 times before starting work on one.

Sometimes they don't even make sense to me until I have fabric out for them. (I'm looking at you, Many Trips Around the World)

more like ... "Crap, gotta wash them again" because by then they smell like mildew.

tho for the microwave food I glance at instructions, and pick a time at the high end of the range, or high-middle.
and for baking, i alter recipes as needed

I look at the instructions and put it to 1 minute more and its still not thawed out. Its always different even for the same type of meal.
