My hotel chain offers employees a really good discount on rooms at other hotels in the chain. Usually the employee rate is about $35 a night. At out hotel the rooms start at $109 so it's a great discount.
So I get this call from a guy in a room that is getting the employee discount, he ask me how to work the fan in the bathroom. I explain that there is not individual fans in the bathrooms, but that there is a central system that comes on periodically. He then just goes off on me on how he is a hotel owner and our chain requires that all bathrooms have exhaust fans that come on when the light switch is turned on. And he just went on and on and on. I wasn't sure if he expected me to go install an exhaust fan that moment or if he wanted a discount on his $35 rate or what.
It seems like as an owner of a hotel he would know the person on the desk at 1AM usually doesn't handle corporate issues. I don't even know if it is a requirement or not. Our hotel is the #1 hotel of our brand in the state and we are in the top 20% in the country, so my owner follows all the rules or gets a waiver, so I'm sure we are OK.
But the fun part is that I looked up this guys hotel on trip advisor and there are multiple complaints about rooms being dirty and the staff being rude. But oddly, not one comment about how people enjoyed the exhaust fan in the bathroom.

always nice when they wave the "i'm an owner in this business" (or any business really) card as if it means they can dictate to another company how to run.... when they themselves have dirty rooms.

        If only.

I often get, "when I worked at this bank, we did *this*, *this*, and *this.*" And it does no good to explain to them that the bank is under new ownership, or that regulations have changed since they retired, or that inflation causes fees to change. I dread having retirees come in.

Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

As someone that stays in hotels 2-3 nights a week, I have to say that I like the central system over the individual fan system. It's quiet and almost always works better.
Seems to me that the other hotel owner was trying to make himself look better by finding any fault he can with a place that does things better than he does.
