  • Why is it always fire?

So this morning, my daughter came up to me, upset that her backpack's front was breaking off a bit. She has one of those Disney backpacks that's got a weird, plasticey front. I figured, eh, I'll repair it real quick with some glue.

Thinking I was so darned smart, I figured I'd use super glue instead of hot glue, and avoid the potential issue of fire.

As soon as I put the super glue on, the spot I was holding got EXTREMELY hot. And then smoke. And then BAM, FIRE!

I kid you not, her backpack burst into flames. /facepalm

Nothing bad happened, though, I ended up slapping the fire out and then left it submerged in a sink of water. So glad I have a backup backpack.

I'm sorry, Seraph. I really am. But, I.... I.... I just can't help it anymore!

I really don't know how you do it. I swear, you must have earned Loki or Coyote's attention somehow...

See, this is why it's so hard to find amusing stories on here now. Every time Seraph posts something the result from other posters is invariably "... you win."

Yeah, it turns out upon further inspection that behind the plastic is a thin cotton layer with some sort of a coating, I guess for waterproofing. I'm assuming cotton + whatever is coating the cotton, went WOOOOO!

Curing super glue does release heat. No surprise. My guess is that the coating is much more flammable than the cotton, and the heat was enough.

Holestly, this isn't the first time I've seen something from Disney react oddly. At my last job, my boss went to Disney World and brought everyone back these... I don't even know what to call them. They were character heads, flat, but sculpted (so some relief) and made of some sort of soft vinyl/plastic/rubber, like an eraser (but they weren't). I have no idea what they were made out of, but they reacted badly with certain plastics. My co-worker left hers on her adding machine for about a month. When she went to remove it, it had melted about 2/3 of the way through the case. I had to bring in my Dremel with a cutting wheel so we could open it to change the tape.

I still have mine in a metal tin somewhere. I was careful to not leave it near plastic.
