SC: I got a violation letter stating that my dog was outside roaming loose.
Me: Okay, how can I help you?
SC: Well, it wasn't loose, I have a fence to keep him in my back yard.
Me: Oh, well that's odd. The picture that I have shows your dog, and I don't see any fence.
    SC: It's invisible.
    Me: What?
SC: I have an invisible fence.
    Me: ...
SC: How could someone say that there is no fence when I have one?
    Me: Because it's invisible?

    Actually not impossible. http://www.dogtek.com/products/elect...g-fence-system

This is usually supplemented by a low barrier intended to keep people from going in the dog's area, though.

I think Raveni knows about invisible fences, I think the last two lines is the real punchline, with the SC expecting the HOA/Town to know there was an invisible fence.

I would think most communities would require someone notify whoever is in charge that such a fence exists to avoid this kind of confusion.

Ah, yes. I was pretty much just complaining about the attitude that somehow we were supposed to see the invisible fence. And that she was offended that we didn't see it.

I mean, that's WHY you installed an invisible fence, right? So no one would see it?

          Isn't that what invisible means?

I think that you're supposed to have a little sign on your yard telling people (kind of like those signs stating you have an alarm system.)

Also there is a specific dog collar the dog has to be wearing for it to work (it has a big black box on it.) Not sure exactly because both our dogs are trained to stay in our yard or in the woods just behind it so we don't have to worry about it so much haha.

It's so I can get ideas out of my head, I decided to put it in a blog in case people are bored or are curious as to the (many) things in progress.

I do have to ask, was the dog in the back yard or was it in the street?

The dog was in the owner's yard, but visible from the street. It was also definitely unattended, as I don't take pictures of people, and there wasn't anyone near the dog.

Growing up, our neighbors down the street had a Great Dane they kept out in the yard with an invisible fence. Either they'd forget to turn it on, or the dog didn't care, or something though, because on more than one occasion he would be loose. I was about 10 years old when he got loose and ran up to play with me...and those big Great Dane paws were going whump whump whump on the pavement....fortunately he didn't jump up on me. Sweetheart dog, and he never strayed far, but yeah...left unsupervised, when he really wanted out, he'd get out.

As an aside, at the community Hubs works in, he only cares if the dog is not on the owner's property. If they're wandering around their own yard, they are ok. Once they pass the property line without a leash, though, it's a citation.

if someone doesn't know about the fence then a dog roaming loose can still be problematic, wouldn't be noticeable if you were driving. You might be afraid to hit the dog charging at the street.

In my Dad's HOA, the invisible fence' is the only type of 'fence' you are allow to put up, and if you are a Dog Owner, I believe they are required.

Dogs really shouldn't be left out alone in yards that have invisible fence. If a dog sees a squirrel or rabbit, it may be so intent on getting the critter it will ignore the shock and go right past the boundary. Now it is on the wrong side and if he tries to go back in to the yard where he belongs, he will get zapped. Some dogs will figure out that they can edge to where the collar gives the warning beep, stay in that zone until the battery on the collar wears down and then go out of the yard. And finally, even if a dog is perfectly trained and would never in a million years leave the yard, there is nothing stopping an attack by a stray dog.

Those collars do have to be correctly calibrated. I used to work with someone who had an invisible fence, and their younger dog suddenly started getting past it. Turns out as he grew up, the initial setting on the collar became too low to affect him, and they had to turn it up.

My parents have an invisible fence for their dog. She's pretty well trained and she has free rein of the yard and the house (they have a doggie dog on the back porch which is screened in and always open to the house). Our old dog on the other hand would go through it occasionally. One memorable time causing us to be late to church cause we had to go chasing after her in the woods around our house.

The current in those fences is supposed meant as a deterrent (e.g. the shock ain't enough to, say, knock out an animal bent on getting out) and the need to be used in conjunction with really. good. training. If you skip or skimp on the training, the electric fence can be next to useless, especially once the pup realizes that once it's past the bit that goes buzz all painful like, the pain goes away.
