  • New job, still sucky customers

So after a long period of working for the paper, then working 1 hour a week at the philosophy department at my school, I am back at working at GameStore in one of the funniest moments I've had in a while. So first day of work was yesterday, the Halo4 midnight release and as expected, there was a few sucky moments. So here's those, plus my first sucky customer ever, from when I volunteered at a library.

Non sucky, but how I was hired.
I was in to pick up a game, and the manager, as I was checking out goes "Hey. You said you've worked at GameStore before right?"
    Me:" Yes?"
    Manager: "You want a job?"
Me: "Yes? I filled out an application online but..."
Manager: *hands me application* "fill this out, put a stickynote on it that says "managers name wants to see this" and bring it back asap. Last GA just transferred out."

and so, with no interview or anything else, I have a job. Manager and coworkers seem great, so here's hoping that it goes well on that end.

We had a mother come in with two children, who looked about ages 5-10? I'm bad at ages, and tend to let children tell me how old they are rather than guess.

    No children's games for children.

    SC: Mother
Ch1: Younger of the two kids
ch2: older of the two kids
Me: new employee with prior experience

SC: "Right. I'm not here because I want to buy you games, I'm here to get you to shut up! Find your game, and let's go."
Ch1: scoots over to ds section, finds pokemon while Ch2 goes over to ps3 and looks at those.
    Ch1"Mom I want pokemon!"
SC: "I'm not buying that crap! You'll just lose it! ask grandma for christmas, go pick out call of duty or uncharted or... something else like that!"
    Ch1 "But... I want pokemon!"
    Ch2 "I want a zombie game!"
after much shouting I ended up interveneing and after determining that "They wouldn't play children's games (possibly because any child game I even suggested was shut down as 'crap'...?) they ended up getting borderlands.

    Please... ask your grandson...

    CG: Clueless grannie.
Me: knower of the strange colored boxes

CG- staring blankly at the ds games
Me: "Hello, can I help you?"
CG: "oh, yes! I'm getting my grandson a birthday present!" *mumbles* "now... what... were those cartoonythings he liked...?"
Me: "Well, does he have a ds or a 3ds? Before we get started?"
    CG: "Um... I think... 3ds...psp...ds...i...?"
Me: "...does it fold up like this?" *clamshell gesture*
Cg: "Ah! yes. I'm pretty sure anyway...."
Me: "And does it have two cameras or one on the front?"
CG: "no idea... I know my son bought it last year so probably the newer one..?"
Me: "well, ds games work on both systems, how old is he?"
CG: "seven, some sort of cartoon game...? action heroes...?"
Me: "I'm going to say that sounds like lego batman then." *shows lego batman*
    CG: "Yes... that seems good..."

she wasn't really that annoying just... seemed like she'd have been better at getting him a gift card if she didn't know what he actually wanted. idk.

    First SC

this was back in high school when I was working for the school library. we had a class in to find books for a research project, when a student came up with this question

Student: "Hi, I'm looking for a book on the war in Africa?"
    Me: "Sure, which one?"
Student: "There was more than one?! "

Tell him a bench has wet paint on it and he’ll have to touch to be sure.

Growing up, I always asked everyone to just give me a giftcard to GameStore. All to often I'd get a game that was for the wrong console or operating system, a game I already had, or a game someone found in the "bargain bin" that was 12 years old.

Reminds me of the student who was shocked that there was more than one galaxy in the universe.
Fiancee: We're going to need to do laundry. I'm out of clean pants.
Me: Sounds like a job for Gravekeeper!
    Fiancee: What?!
    Me: Nevermind.

I'm a Grandma, and not much of a gamer. And I don't live close to my granddaughter. Plus I prefer to give something more personal than a gift card, usually. That said, before I shop for games for my granddaughter, I call or email my daughter, and verify the system granddaughter has, ask if there's something she especially wants, and update my list of what she already has so I don't duplicate. And since I know her general interests because I listen when she talks to me, I usually do ok.

As for the mom with the kids, yep, her first sentence to her kids said it all. She wanted them to shut up, but wasn't wanting to buy them games. So to shut them up they got a trip to the game store & technically a game - as long as it was one mom or dad would play, not what the kids wanted.

      Madness takes it's toll....
      Please have exact change ready.

and this I'm fine with. But if you're not willing to at least find out what system the kid has, or what kind of games he's into... perhaps buying him something else would be for the best.

When I lived by them I used to get my nieces and nephews gift cards to a store they wold want something from, then I'd bring them to redeem them and we'd got out to eat too (usually Chuckie Cheese). It was easier than them getting 3 of the same "popular" toy/game of the season.

I used to get them at one place I worked at, asking what music 15-year-old boys would like. Little difficult for me to say, having never been and 15-year-old boy.

I don't mind GameStore cards, myself -- if people ask me what I want for XMAS, I just say to give me a GS card or cash ^_^ I like to make it easy for them
