  • What's On Your Menu? Thanksgiving 2012 Edition

The Favorite Comfort Foods/Holiday Foods thread inspired me to do this.

Frankly, I'm surprised nobody's started this time-honored tradition yet so I'll start.

I've already got word that my Stepmom will NOT be cooking again this year - she and Dad can't find anyone to sit w/her Mom that day, so they'll be spending the day with her at the assisted living place. My baby sis is working a new nanny gig and she's got to pull a 3rd shift starting at 7 that evening, so I'll be at home and it'll just be the three of us (five if you count Buddy and Abby.)

    Thanksgiving Dinner:

Butterball Turkey Breast (already in the fridge thawing)

    Pan of Dressing

    Cranberry Sauce

    green beans w/white corn

potatoes (not sure if Mom wants Tater Salad or Mashed Taters, but it'll be either one we feel like.)

Croissants (which I'll pick up fresh Wed. after work at Wallyworld)

    For Dessert:

    Sweet Potato Pie
    Chocolate Cream Pie

I was originally wanting a sinfully chocolate cake but I'm now leaning toward a cheesecake sampler. We'll see what I wander out with to take home.

And yes, I picked up a fresh bottle of Chardonnay . . . white goes better with Turkey.

Well we go to my aunt's every year so I don't know for sure everything on the menu, but the usual way of things is:

Roast turkey with stuffing and gravy
Mashed potatoes (my mom is bringing)
    Peas
    cranberry sauce
-------(if you read the other thread you know here's where I'm done, minus the stuffing )-------
    Broccoli casserole
    candied sweet potatoes
bread rolls (I eat them too, usually I sneak them while they're finishing getting dinner ready)
maybe some other stuff but I don't pay that much attention to the stuff I don't eat

dessert usually includes various pie, ice cream, cookies, and my cousin's wife the last few years has made a pear-cranberry pie which is pretty good

My work gives out pies and turkeys every year; usually we get a choice of one or the other, but this year they gave us a choice of one of 4 pie flavors, and then a few days later they said we could also choose either a turkey or a $20 ShopRite (grocery store) gift card, so I got an apple pie that I'm bringing to my aunt's and the gift card which is nice since I had to throw out most of what was in my fridge/freezer after 5+ days with no power. My boss suggested cinnamon ice cream to go with the pie so if I can find it I'm going to get some (apparently Wegman's makes one so I'll see if my local store carries it).

Pizza and pumpkin pie (assuming I remember to buy a pie). I'll be at work.

Aethian, I'm sorry you got dumped and bailed on! You should totally have one of the pies, at least.

I know we're having turkey, probably just a breast & a couple of thighs (for the dark meat).
Probably roasted veggies-- we cut up potatos, parsnips, sweet potatoes and carrots, sprinkle with herbs, and roast them on a cookie sheet. We have some flavored oils so we'll probably use one of those. Maybe the blood orange one. Yummm.

Also sweet corn, dinner rolls, whole-berry cranberry sauce. For dessert, pumpkin pie and chocolate pie. Oh, and pumpkin spice coffee! I might pick up a bottle of wine if I get a chance.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

Already had my Thanksgiving dinner as being someone living north of the 49th parallel we celebrate the holiday the first Sunday in October.

            Gorged out on:
            Turkey
            Garlic mashed potatoes
            Sweet potatoes
            Carrots
            Broccoli
            Cauliflower
            Cranberry jelly
            dinner rolls
            Salad made with spring mix,
            and of course homemade gravy

It was also middle child's birthday that day so for dessert we had his favourite strawberry cheesecake, pumpkin pie and birthday cake.

I'm not sure what the rest of the menu is at my parent's, but I'm bringing bacon stuffed sauteed mushroom caps.

Aethian, if you didn't live so far from me, I'd tell you to get your butt over to my house - we'll have more than plenty and I've got both white and red wine too.

I hate you got dumped and bailed out on . . . it royally sucks donkey balls!

Wow, thanks for all the dinner invites. *snug hugs to all*

Mom got a date...I can't tell a 70 year old she can't go on a date. So I didn't mean it harsh when I said she bailed on me. As for the dumping well...thats another story for between he and I.

Aethian, I'm not sure where you are, but if you are near me (Buffalo, NY area), you are more than welcome to come by! Especially since I told my dad I *really* didn't want to to Thanksgiving with the extended family unless it was at my Grandpa's since only if it's there would I actually see him.

So since it's just my dad and I, and I am pretty "meh" on the whole turkey thing unless I can have the skin Dad and I decided to do something different for just him and I.

Pork Shoulder with a glaze that my dad found a recipe that normally goes for green ham.
Extra Creamy and buttery garlic potatoes
                        Roast Carrots
I've got a Butternut Squash and an Acorn Squash I need to figure out what to do with.
And my dad is bringing stuff for collard greens (omnomnomnomnomnom)

And then I've got 2 cans of apple pie filling and 2 cans of sweetened condensed milk I want to make into dolche de leche and try and decide what I want to do with the two for dessert.

Now if we had Thanksgiving at my Grandpa's, it would easily be at least 22 people. Complete with an entire turkey and stuffing and cranberry sauce, rolls and biscuits, various casseroles, and veggies everywhere, plus the pumpkin pie and pecan pie, and a cheesecake, plus one type of fruit pie at least!

The one thing I will miss though by not going to the big family Thanksgiving at my Aunt's this year is the pickle and olive tray since my cousin J and I would always get in trouble growing up eating the entire thing before dinner was served. Now that we're older, well, we still do it

Chicken casserole and cottage potatoes with maybe some corn as a side. My husband and I never do anything big since it's just the 3 of use (bibby is 2 1/2) but I may pick up a pie since I don't have a real oven and both dishes have to be baked. The toaster oven works fine for most meals though.

Heh...that never lasted long around my cousins and me, either. I like pickles, one of them likes olives, and the other likes both.
