  • A Short Example

Our dept. recently started selling cakes from some famous chef. They're like $25 each. The other day CW was standing at the counter when a woman approached her to ask about the price of the cake. CW told her the price, SC walked away with the cake box. CW told me she figured she was putting the cake back, since she hadn't seemed thrilled with the price. But sadly, this SC was not ready to give up. SC walked a few feet away, flipped the box upside down, and dropped it on the floor! She then picked up the (now damaged) cake, walked back up to CW, and asked for a discount because cake was damaged. She tried to say the cake was damaged when she first approached CW with it, but I guess neither of them was supposed to have noticed. Needless to say, she did not get a discount on the cake - CW told her she saw the whole thing and would call an SM if SC wanted to push the issue.

It's amazing to me what people will do for a discount.

Bloody hell. When I was in the fruit and veg game, a compatriot in the field let it be known that he always had a Monday 'damaged bin' where he sold off at a discount the weekend's damaged or 'distressed' stock.

After a bit, he started getting people intentionally damaging stuff on the Saturday and falling in the door on Monday morning as they opened up to get to the distressed stuff first.

It should be perfectly acceptable to charge people when they intentionally break or damage things. Full Price of course.

While I would normally agree with this, I must disagree this time. If it's intentional breakage, then the PITA tax should be applied on top of the full price with the stipulation that they either purchase the item they damaged or they be banned from the store.

On the other hand, letting your kids run free in a store full of breakables and they break something should be full price. (While not intentional, it's not accidental either.) Same goes for horsing around in an area of breakables. You don't intend to break things, but you should know better than to do that around breakables.

Hitting them HARD in the checkbook is the only way most of them will learn to respect other people's stuff.. even if that stuff is owned by a corporation.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

I recall seeing a sign reading something like, "Pretty to look at, lovely to hold. But if you break it, consider it sold."

              Sounds like vandalism to me.

One of our stores wanted to enact this policy; they had people horsing around with their merchandise and breaking it or damaging the collectible packaging. I checked the law in my state and found it wasn't enforceable when worded like this; and accident like an item slipping through your fingers is covered by store insurance. The store would have to word the sign as such: 'You will be required to pay for damage to merchandise or packaging caused by negligence or horseplay" It was interesting to learn this.

Famous chef? Could it be Buddy Valastro? The Cake Boss? If so, then that would explain the price. The guy has his own TV show (Cake Boss) and is a celebrity in his own right.

I was wondering that, too. I'd love to buy a cake made by him. He's really talented.

First one I thought of. He did just start offering a couple cakes in stores.

$25 is a good price for a cake made by one of those guys. Intentionally damaging one is heinous.

Same. But not willing to fork over the no doubt criminal price of a specialty cake. That, and the wait in line for the store would no doubt be terrible. I believe the norm is a 4 hour wait. I have always wanted to try a canoli and lobster tail from the place.
