  • Going into bartending?

I need a second job when I come back

And since I've served beer and wine for work before, I thought about getting more complex and being a full on bartender.
I can make some cocktails, and I'm good at reading instructions for mixes and cocktails.
    However
    I'm in California.

I'm planning on taking the servsafe alcohol test, but I think for some places, I need an actual license. I am willing to get it. But is there a place I can get it affordable?

I can't help you on the license thing, as I'm not familiar with California's laws, rules, and regulations regarding bartending, but if you have other questions about bartending, feel free to ask me, either here or in PM, whichever you prefer.

Oi, Jester, stop trying to recruit your minions so openly!

Katherine, please. I'm not trying to recruit anyone. Just trying to help someone who is considering going into a field I know a thing or two about. Nothing more, nothing less.

My mom thinks its a bad job, because I'm so small and "cute small girls can't protect themselves against drunks"

Nevermind that my 3rd degree black belt father and second degree black belt brother taught me growing up...and that I've dealt with worse.

No, I'm not invincible, but its not THAT dangerous. I know a woman my height who does just fine in ten years of bartending and going strong.
Work for a good place, have good bouncers/security/coworkers, and incidents won't be like OMG all the time.

Sigh. (Really. I sigh anytime I see that statement) - Size doesn't have as big an issue in 'fights' as people often make out. Leverage, knowing what to twist/put pressure on, are things that matter. My five foot ish skinny ass friend, can immobilize 6 foot 2 giant ass me with ease, and the same in return.

So I wish you good luck in Bartendering, and I'd say take up Jester on his offer. He'd probably have so many tips and info your head would explode.

I've worked at the same bar for just about six years now. The total number of fights or physical altercations I've been involved in with drunk customers or just generally obnoxious people is exactly zero.

Look, unless you expect to be the sole staff member on duty during a time when there are many drunk idiots in there, I don't think I'd worry too much about physical confrontations. And even then, it is unlikely in most bars. Obviously there are some bars where this is more likely, but if you are not working in one of those, I think your mother may be somewhat overreacting.
