    Technically they don't need permission to do a cover. IIRC they're suppose to notify the song-writer within 30 days of making the recording, but the song-writer has no say in whether or not it's used. Song-writers only get to say who records it first. Normally they'll "ask" as a courtesy but ... it's also why, say, some punk band did a cover of a Simon & Garfunkle song - knowing fully well that Simon *HATES* punk.

    Although I don't know if they'd owe him any money for it... that I'm not sure on. what I saw on a snopes explanation (about Michael Jackson 'owning' the rights to the Beatles's music) is that the song-writer would receive royalties from the recording label.

    So permission isn't requires, but ... from what I can tell, compensation / payment IS.


    What's gonna get them is THIS.
    After listening, I think that @GLEEonFOX may have even used parts of my recording. Do I hear a duck quack? And of course they say "Johnny C"
    If they used parts of the original recording without permission that's something different.

        Check with Sir Mix-a-lot. he says sure.

        Some Idiot says "Hey! Let's do this version!", not realizing That they should probably check with the new artist.

        Trouble.

          ooo good point. i completely forgot about sir mix-a-lot. so JC wouldn't even have "songwriter's" rights exactly. His own unique elements yes, but the song itself not so much.

          although this is where taking actual clips from his song is where they may have screwed up.

                      They aired the song, and now it's on iTunes. From what Coulton says on his blog, their reaction was "you should be happy for the exposure," while not actually crediting him with the arrangement.
