  • job interview part 1

had an interview today... not going to talk too much about it cos i don't want to jinx things, but a few things stood out in my mind.

job is working with a "solutions" company

The interviewer told me that there would be pros and cons to the job and started to talk about the challenges - customers who delay the project but still want it on overtime, all the multi tasking, etc...

but the more he talked about it the more fun it sounded. and yeah i understand customers who screw up projects (thanks to stories here and to stuff i heard about in some of my programming classes)

oh and that was the "con" stuff.

    Me: That was the "bad"?
    seriously it sounded like fun.

The good apparently was the compensation and benefits. such as the company would provide me whatever tools i needed - smart phone, ipad.

All I could think was "um phone?... whatever. the job sounds great!" (didn't say it though but yeah i was more interested in the work not a free phone)
cos maybe it's me but... if they pay me enough I'll just buy my own phone. A company phone? That's just for them to get ahold of me on and for me to do work on. I don't know if they can legally monitor it but ... If they're giving it to me, I kinda expect it. I'll just have 2 phones then.

but anyway, hopefully. i'm not holding my breath (cos no matter how promising a job is, i don't count the eggs until I'm actually being told "come in to work at this date/time")

I keep my fingers, eyes and toes crossed for you! Good luck!
No trees were killed in the posting of this message.

However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

If the cons make you want the job, then I hope you get what you wish for!

No, seriously . . . sounds like a cool job, and I hope you get it.

heh. might as well just use this same thread for job interviews.

i was watching the vids posted in Employee fired on "Undercover Boss" for ranting about customers and what I said there really applies in job hunting:

people like the moron in that vid make it easier for the rest of us to job hunt.

I still haven't heard back from the "solutions" company yet (might be another week or 2) but in the meantime I'm still looking. I had an interview last week for another retail job and... they scheduled me for my second interview during my first.

during today's interview the manager i spoke with pretty much indicated that the fact I showed up early and dressed professionally was putting me ahead of other applicants. he's had people show up in shorts and people who couldn't even capitalize sentences in their resume. (the latter never even got a first interview).

i want the other job more but ... in all honesty i want a paycheck. and this job has perks too... like being 5 miles away. (commute is under 15 minutes)

Short answer: Yup. They own it and pay the bills, they can monitor it.

We monitor all the phone usage for the iPhones work provides the maintenance guys. If lots of non-work stuff pops up, or we find them loading up non-work apps, steps are in place to investigate, and possibly even get someone in deep doo. There is already a lot of leeway in the system, and no one gets upset at a few non-work calls, but when you're talking to the same non-work number(s) a lot, it gets noticed here.
The Rich keep getting richer because they keep doing what it was that made them rich. Ditto the Poor.

yeah. I figure if I get that job and a free phone... the only thing going on it would be the following:

              1) My "study music" - small playlist of music that helps me relax/concentrate (mostly classical music, some prog rock etc)
              2) Stuff that can be used for work, like memos & notes, calendar, maybe a worksafe background*
              3) Oh and some ringtones perhaps - most likely homemade tho. just so I can differentiate between contacts & between phones etc.

anything else... would go on my own device.

              * right now on my ipod touch I have the dog on my "lock" screen and Captain America (movie, with the WW2 shield) on the wallpaper.

still havent heard from them yet tho
