  • doctor who retrospective

on BBC amercia they are showing on a monthly basis a retrosepctive featuring each Doctor, and following a "classic" episode, in William Hartnels case "The Aztecs"

So the wife and I were wondering what other "classic" episodes would be featured for each subsequent Doctor.

we had a few ideas, and I thought it might be fun to speculate with the rest of thw Whovians on site.

2nd: tough because so many are lost. even money on "Tomb of the Cybermen" and a longshot on "The War Games"

3rd: a lot of good episodes. thinking " the Green Death" or "the Time Warrior" with "The 3 Doctors" as a mid longshot and "Inferno" as the longshot

4th: thinking "The Brain of Morbius" or "Genesis of the Daleks"

5th: "earthshock" with "the 5 doctors" as a longshot.

6th: The Twin Dilema with The 2 Doctors as a longshot.

7th: Silver Nemesis or Paradise Towers

    8th: only one option there.....

    9th : Dalek

10th: family of blood 2 parter with Blink as the longshot

    11th: Pandorica 2 Parter.

    your thoughts?
Lister: This is Crazy. Why are we talking about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone?
Cat: You're right. We're Nuts! This is an insane conversation....
Lister: She'll never leave Fred and we know it.

Just curious, but how were episodes featuring the 2nd Doctor lost?

Depends on what you want to watch. For that reason, I'm going to suggest two from each era. I'll also limit myself to serials that actually exist. (Dammit, "Evil of the Daleks.")

My first list should probably be "The Romans," "The Dominators," "Frontier in Space," "City of Death," "Kinda," "Vengeance on Varos," "Ghost Light," "Dalek," "The Shakespeare Code," and "Vincent and the Doctor."

For runner-ups, let's go with "The Keys of Marinus," "Tomb of the Cybermen," "Inferno," "Genesis of the Daleks," "Frontios," "The Mysterious Planet," "The Happiness Patrol," "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances," "The Unicorn and the Wasp," and "The Doctor's Wife."

Limiting ourselves to serials that actually exist is a pain in the neck, because it means no "Evil of the Daleks," "Marco Polo," "Myth Makers," "Dalek Masterplan," or "Enemy of the World," but it does spare us "The Abominable Snowmen," "The Underwater Menace," and "The Massacre."

Wait, what? When did this start? How did I not hear about it? Why is this not On Demand? And at what time are they airing these? And under what title? If they are not going to put them On Demand, I can at least DVR them!

this is back when it was kept on reels, a lot of episodes were lost, stolen or burned with no backup.

            talks about it:

They were lost because the BBC didn't think that Doctor Who at the time would be as popular as it became. They sold off a lot of the Hartnell and Troughton episodes. Many are incomplete.

There was a project started a few years back where they were redoing the episodes via Flash. I think they were able to get one Troughton one done, but I forget which story.

Everything from Pertwee on is around.

Btw, the special is airing tonight not next week. DaDairyDruid made a mistake. Hopefully they will reair it if you do miss it. Ironically we watched The Aztecs a few weeks back on Netflix streaming.

              DDD: Cuz it's cool

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

that is one of the jokes made about blink... imost whovians agree that if they ended up in 1967 they would buy a VCR and a ton of Blank tapes....

Oddly I turned on my tv right around the time that said special was ending, and I was pissed. I checked the times for it, and that was the only time listed, at least for the moment. So I hope that they either re-air it, or it comes up On Demand at some point.

They MIGHT re air the Hartnel episode before they air the Troughten one.

Though The Aztecs probably wont be re shown, but as the wife said its Streaming on Netflix under Doctor Who Classics.

And the wife would like to remind the husband that we watched The Aztecs just a couple of weeks ago on Netflix streaming.

Yeah, it was pretty nice. I think we might watch a few others soon.

I did get a chance to see the DVD of "The Invasion" with its two episodes of Cosgrove Hall flash, and thought it was pretty good. Unfortunately, it didn't really sell as well as they were hoping. The cost of producing the visuals for two entire 25-minute episodes must have added a lot to the release budget, far more than just sticking the episode on a two-disk set with a few special features, which meant that they would have had to sell that many more disks to make up for it - and while it sold briskly, it didn't quite meet expectations.

That having been said, they're doing a release of "The Reign of Terror" with two episodes of Theta Sigma animation. I hope they do very well with it so that they'll continue to restore lost episodes this way.

Also, while all of Jon Pertwee's stuff does exist in full, a few serials are in black and white, and some stations have been reluctant to syndicate them.
