  • Commander McBrag

There is a man who unfortunately visits my place of business at least once a month. We call him "Commander McBrag." He looks like he's in his 70's, but has told my guards that he has been in every world war. Considering that the first one went from 1914-1918, if that were true, he would be in the neighborhood of 120 (I don't know the age restriction for enlistment back then off the top of my head). He claims he is blind (and carries around a walking stick thingie that he never uses), but he can see me well enough and anyone that walks by he recognizes.

He comes to my building every month for a public meeting. He tells people he's a commissioner for the city, but he isn't. My first encounter with him was him trying to enter the building before it opened (these meetings start pretty early), and when I told him the building was still closed he threatened to get me fired because he's a commissioner and can make that happen. (To my chagrin, I gave in to his bluff. But never since.) He still knocks on the front door every time. And every time I tell him the building is closed and promptly ignore him. Unfortunately, even if I do not let him in, virtually every tenant in the building that starts early will let him into the lobby as they enter the building. There is no point in kicking him back out, because someone else will let him right back in within 5 minutes. Even POLICE that work in the building will let this guy in, and they couldn't possibly recognize the guy.

And what does he do when he makes it into the building? He just parks himself right next to my desk. And stares at me. And waits. Now, I can ignore him (and I do!), but he can't seem to go five minutes without talking to someone. So, without fail, he'll get on his phone and seemingly call up his contact list one after another to have someone to talk at. (And remember, this is before the sun rises. I'd hate to be on his contact list.) When the floor finally opens up, he scoots off upstairs.

Two hours later, he's right back down and sitting next to me again. Staring. Talking to people as they pass by. Calling people on his phone. Hitting some button on his phone so it vocalizes the time. He tells us to keep an eye on our security feed for his ride (couldn't care less buddy). He acts all nice and (if I'm not there) talks about me behind my back to the other guards, like they wouldn't mention to me what he said. Back when we had female guards, he would hit on them in a very creepy way.

And just the other week, he went up to the tenants that owned the building to complain about security not letting him in early. Fortunately, the person he talked to happens to be a friend of mine and had my back. She then came down later and told me what he tried to do.

He's not a nightmare to deal with, but boy. He's obnoxious. Anyone have any "favorite" SC's that bother them regularly? Or, if not a specific person, a type of person?

Actually, by strict definition of what a world war entails, the earliest conflict involving the majority of the countries was the Eighty Years War from 1568-1648. Perhaps you could ask him which side of that conflict he fought on...

Only if you want to spend the next hour or so listening to his answer.

We have one guy who lost his license about 10 years ago, and wants it back. So every month or so he comes down to the office in person with a box full of framed diplomas and certificates to show us. And every month or so, we explain to him yet again that we can't take any action until he sends an application.

I have been out there to talk to him so many times, and every time I give him printouts of our website with the application link highlighted, copies of the sample application, copies of the procedures for application, copies of the laws with the requirements to gt licensed.... And every month he's back with the same box and the exact same questions.

Sounds like handful Stone, I'm glad you're so patient with him.

I think I've detailed most of my most trying regulars elsewhere, but believe me, you have my sympathy.

And let's be generous and say he signed up with another country (not the AEF) at the tender age of 14. Still makes him 113!

We have a special snowflake like that. He comes in every other day for smokes, takes 2 minutes to decide to buy the same thing. He yells at staff, calls the server names, denigrates them, and demands instant attention. I've told the wombles that they can refuse to serve him if he keeps up and I'm not there, or I'll serve him. So far he's run close to the blowtorch, but not into it. I look forward to the day he tries it on too far with me.

Hmm, veteran of both world wars, city commissioner, etc... I wish I could remember the military vet organization that specializes in uncovering false records, they might take some interest in this. I'm reasonably certain he couldn't be a WW I vet, The US's last verifiable WW I vet was Frank Buckles, DOD 2-27-11, and I remember it being a big enough deal that the ceremony at Arlington National was attended by both Obama and Biden.

FYI, you can call him out on the WW1 claims with this: Last Doughboy has passed away at 110.

As for his WW2 claims, that's hard to believe too. My Dad went in at the tail-end of the war and is almost 86 now. So unless the guy joined up in his early teens then yeah he's lying.

Granted stuff like that *did* happen in ww2. Men lied about their age to join up, but not usually the 12 year olds. Actually one of my BF's neighbors from growing up lied ... the man was too old to enlist so he lied and claimed to be much younger, even maintained the physical standards of the age he claimed to be. (rather impressive really).

Also, if you specifically find someone pretending to be a Seal head over to http://www.extremesealexperience.com and contact Don. He maintains the database on who's been in training. If he can't find them then they're faking it.

I have no doubt he would manage to come up with an answer. Perhaps he was in Cryo sleep.

Oh god, at least I have the luxury of ignoring my guy. Having to respond to his antics that often? Yeesh.

I explored that site (and links found in that site), but it looks like I would have to fill out some forms to see if he has service records.

and in all honesty they probably won't do anything about him. i mean they may let you know if he served or not, but they won't prosecute him.

They can only prosecute if the person "uses those false claims or Medals to gain anything of material or monetary value."

That's why some sites simply just make fun of them publicly now. Cos ... the fakers can't claim "libel" since it's the truth.

Oh yeah, no, I wouldn't bother with trying to get him in trouble...I would just find it amusing to be able to use it as ammo some day, if he ever brings it up again.

Of course, he'd claim that the U.S. Government suppressed his WW1 and WW2 records because they were pissed at him for wearing grey 150 years ago.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

Of course my Dad joined up in 39, retired in 69 and was in WW2, Korea and Vietnam. He died a couple years back at 90. There are still guys alive that served in WW2 ... just not that many now.
