  • Our worst child neglect story to date (a coworker's tale)

Posted with permission from my coworker who was the one who handled it. This was long before I started working here. My coworker was just starting his shift. As he was signing onto the computer he looked up and noticed that there were two kids by themselves in the lobby. He didn't think too much of it at first, they were old enough that they could handle being left alone for short periods (8-10 age range) and figured that whoever they were with had run to the restroom while they waited in the lobby or maybe dropped them off to come inside where it is warm while they parked the car, or something similar.
Well, half an hour later after dealing with several guests he realizes that the children are still there and he has seen no one interacting with them as if they were a responsible party, no parents, no older siblings, nothing. Well, this would be a really long bathroom visit at this point, so obviously something is up. He paged security (always have a witness, just in case) and met the security guard in the lobby to talk with the children. They asked the children if they knew where their parents were. The children responded we don't know, we were driving, we must have fallen asleep, we remember waking up in the car because it was so cold and our parents weren't there, so we came in here where it is warmer. They did know their parent's names and phone numbers even. Security did a page over the casino overhead to have them come to the hotel lobby. No one responded for a good 15 minutes.
They couldn't believe that someone would check in and forget their kids, but just in case, they looked to see if they were guests in house... no, no rooms under the parents' names. So as a last resort they called the parents' cell phones. They were able to get through, and they found out the parents were... oh, do sit down for this one, already in the outer suburbs of Sacramento.
I will repeat that, because it bears repeating, the parents were almost to Sacramento.
They admitted to stopping at the casino to gamble for a while while their children slept in the back of the car (in the winter, yeah, brilliant), went out to their car, saw the blankets on the back seat and assumed their kids were still sound asleep and drove off. I don't know all the details after that, but the short version is that by the time the parents (and I do use that term loosely by now) got back to the resort the children were already in state custody (presumably with the intention of transferring them over to California as soon as possible) and they were greeted by some of Washoe County's finest, with some lovely new fashion accessories.

This is one reason why they always have "Gambling Problem? Call 1-800-xxx-yyyy". I'm guessing it's the addiction and doing whatever is necessary to feed it.

Actually, this can be a new invention. Gamblers can bring their kids to a level of the building strictly for day care and prepay for so many hours, then get a locking wristband (can only be unlocked or removed by the staff). When so many hours are used up, the wristband buzzes and prevents the current slot machine from accepting any more credits or plays. Or if they're at a manned blackjack or poker table, the dealer can get a pit boss to help remove the customer from the table if the customer isn't removing themselves in order to get their child.

Um, okay sorry if I'm missing something here but wouldn't blankets with nothing underneath them look decidedly different to blankets covering the bodies of two children. I mean unless they had a ton of pillows or something as well there's no way they could've made them look like the kids were still lying there.

Wow. I'm sorry for those kids, if their parents can't even tell they're not in the car (and don't bother to check!) before they take off. Hope the system made the parents jump through a LOT of hoops before giving them the kids back.

Tama -- from his "location" box -- somewhere not too incredibly far from Reno, Nevada ...soooo, two hours' drive or more away.

As for the kids -- at least the kids themselves ended up OK o_O

I hope they found better parents for the kids and didn't give them back. People like that don't deserve to be parents.

As two states are involved, it seems the system is already on it.

This is just so wrong....as a father of 2 i dont let them out of my sight most of the time. Specially with the April Jones happening 8 doors away from us now. But if my 2 were alseep in the car when me and the mrs stopped one of us would stay or wake them up and take them with us.

And as my family live over 4 hours drive from us we do drive a fairly long distance with them often
We are the willing, led by the unknowing, doing the impossible, for the ungrateful, we have now done so much, for so long - for so many, with so little, we can now do anything with nothing!!!

of course we are assuming a lack of intoxication also (none of us know if they had been drinking or not, but it could explain a lot).

Yeah, I can't post my exact location because it would give away exactly where I work (I do live in Reno though, so let's go with commuting distance of Reno), and from where I live to the first suburbs outside Sacramento is just around 2 hours (to city center is one of those only God knows how long it will take with how Sacramento's traffic changes). Again, that is assuming they aren't speeding, which I've heard of people who make the trip from Reno to Sacramento in an hour and a half (for the record, they're nuts, borderline suicidal to make the drive over Donner that fast), so they were gone for at least an hour and a half.

eta- I'm sure even being vague that I'll get at least one PM from a local who guesses correctly on where I work.

That's beside the point. Parents very quickly learn that you do not assume until you have verified all children being there by the tried and true practice of counting noses.
