  • My dad

I don't normally do posts like this or get involved in them to be honest, they always seem a little alien to me. However now I have a better appreciation for them.

For reasons I'm not going into I've never gottne past my learner's permit so I get rides everywhere and usually my retired dad will drive me no problem. He's been sick since christmas with a bad cold that seemed to come and go. So when my mom went on vacation for a week to the bahamas with my aunt and cousin it was agreed I'd stay a couple nights at said aunts because she lives near where I work instead of the 20 minute drive from home. Well combine the sky vomiting tons of snow and my dad not feeling up to driving me I was stuck in town for 4 days solid. I finally got home when another aunt gave me a ride. My dad was throwing up too much to come get me. I get home about 11:30 and he seems ok just sick. Around 7 I here him yelling my name, I go downstairs and long story short I ended calling him an ambulance, he couldn't even really sit up on his own he was so dizzy.

Because of the weather I had to get my uncle, the paramedics my cousing and two people that were visiting my cousin to help carry him down our laneway to the ambulance and load him on the stretcher.

My uncle took me in to see him the next morning in emergency. He seemed very weak, he said he had a bladder infection and the nurse confirmed it. I stayed for a few mminutes. I went home after. My aunt who gave the ride and another one (I have a big family) visited him and said he seemed very confused abotu what was going on and I later got a call from a volunteer who ahd been asked to call me by my dad to let me know that he was in the hospital. I saw him the next day and took him some stuff (glasses, clothes and books) but he was stil very weak and not keeping anything down.

My mom finally got home that night, I told her everything, I had called her on the trip to let her know. My mom saw him the next morning and I saw him that night with her again. He was outright hallucinating, and didn't know where he was half the time. He knew us but thought other people were there or was asking about what I was holding in my hands when they were empty. He is right out of his mind. Apparently a bladder infection can cause hallucination and shakiness but nowhere near this bad. With the suddenness of his change the specialist is wondering if he had a stroke. They don't really know yet what's going on, the ct scan didn't show anything and he won't settle down enough for an mri but they are running other tests.

I don't mind saying that I'm scared right now

Not that I'm a doctor, or that this is necessarily going to be in any way helpful, but when my Grandmother had similar issues last year, the painkiller they put her on (it happened to be oxycodone, I think) sent her all demented. As soon as they took her off of it, she was back to normal. They accidentally gave it to her again in the ambulance to rehab and POW! nasty, mean, dementia.

(She now has a Med Bracelet mentioning that that painkiller is a bad idea.)

They don't have him on any painkillers, I just got a call from my mom at the hospital. It may not be the only issue but my dad has a severe magnesium deficiency and if you look at the list of symptoms is basically a checklist for my dad's condition.

Wow, that's scary. I hope when they give him magnesium his symptoms clear up.
