Does anyone have a preferred tax prep company? I am deciding where to go. I've used our family accountant before, and he's great, but I'd rather not go through having to mail stuff to California. Doing it here would just be easier. Opinions on who's good, who I should avoid, etc?
Oh, and has anyone ever gotten a 1099-C and been able to be excluded? I've read you can if you fill out a 9-something form. Just wondering if anyone has had that experience. Thanks, y'all.

    How complicated are your taxes?

I free file through Turbo Tax every year. It helps me get back all that I can. But my taxes are really simple.

I had some issues with the dmv, so I don't know if the sale is counted for 2012 or 2013. I have a 1099-C form, which may or may not add $6,000 to my income. I don't know if I can be excluded from tax on that or not. It's a possibility, but I don't know for sure. I have an HSA account, which warrants another special form, as it's pre-tax money. Yeah, I'd rather have a professional do it.

My taxes are simple too, so I do my own online. But, I'd recommend checking the pricing on any preparer you use. My Mom went to a person w/ H&R Block last year, and wound up paying double what her independent person charges.

I have the same person I have used for the past 3 years.. sooooo much easier having someone else do it. She will also show me any changes I need to make to my withholding, as well as a guess to what my refund might be since I will be having a couple more deductions next year.

Our fam accountant will usually charge me $100. Is that reasonable? It's not a huge hassle to fill out the packet they send and mail it in.

That's a bargain. It's less than the mega-chain I work with would charge.
BTW, the form to exclude debt on a 1099-C is Form 982. Yes, I've completed a couple of those for clients.
As for your HSA: Form 8889 and Publication 969.

$100 is a bargin, considering it probably would cost you about $30 or MORE for simple taxes.

Or you can do what I've done the last five years, including this year, and see if you can get your taxes done for free. That may be done at a local library with limit hours and days, with a VERY long wait time. This year was the shortest I've done it, with a two-hour wait [the wait time and the actual preperation of taxes] -- last two years prior it took four hours just to get to me.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

With regards to the 1099C if you really want to know before you try filling out that form or having someone do it, just call us. (The IRS) We can tell you. Also we can tell you if there is any places nearby the will do your taxes for you for free so long as you made less than 57k.

In most of my experiences with 1099C on the balance due aspect side, its unlikely it will be tax free. Possible, as its not my area of expertise in the tax law side of things, just highly unlikely.

If that's the case, I'd be happy to break even. If I owe I have no idea how I would pay.

There's several options available to you. There's two types of payment plans, an 180 day extension of time to pay and an Installment agreement (or in other words pay us like a credit card) .

180 days extension is just that 180 days or months from the time you call to set it to get it paid off. no min payment per month, no payment date just as long as its paid off by the end of the 180 days we're happy.

The installment agreement is very much like a credit card. Min payment per month by specific date, but at your choice. You chose how much and what date at the initial set up then its static from there on out. You will accrue penalties and interest on any balance not paid by the 15th until its paid in full. (does not matter if you are on a payment plan or not) There is also a set up fee of 43,52, or 105 for the Installment plan. The biggest difference between us and a credit card is everything goes to the initial tax first, nothing goes to penalties or interest until the original tax is gone. Otherwise no one would pay off their taxes. That's it roughly in a nutshell, my entire phone spiel is a lot more detailed but I don't think you want a wall o' text. lol
