  • Why would you bring your sick dog to day care?

After another long hiatus, I'm back!

I have worked with animals for years, in many forms. I volunteer at a rescue (fostering and rehabbing dogs), I've worked at a vet clinic, I work at a pet supply store where I specialize in dog nutrition, and I also work at a dog day care center now. I thought that I had seen it all before coming to work here...but no. No. The amount of stupidity is even worse now than ever.

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE my job. I quit a job that paid me almost twice as much because I love the environment. But some of the owners of these dogs are...well....to put it bluntly, INSANE!

A few days ago, I noticed one of the dogs was not acting his normal self. I told my boss, and said I noticed he was more anti-social than normal and I think his eye is a little puffy. It is noted, and told to the owners that day. They give us this explanation; "We're aware of it, he is on meds for it but it's too hard to give them to him consistently."

The last two days, his poor eye is more and more squinty/watery. He's miserable, and today he tried to bite me for coming near him. We told them that until he is feeling better, he can't come back. Their response? "But it's too hard to give him the medication every day! It takes three of us to hold him to get the eye drops in!"

The dog in question is a 4lb MinPin. Seriously...who has a dog that is in pain and NOT happy and think it's okay to bring to day care?

This episode is not the only one either. We've had someone think that instead of seeking a behaviorist or trainer for their dog's problems, they'll just put them here all day. We've had someone bring in a dog who after he failed his temperament test, we learned that he was kicked out of two other day cares because of starting serious fights and causing injuries - but none of them were his fault of course! The list goes on....some day when I have time I will have to write them out, if anyone's interested in hearing.
    Pit bull-

There is no breed of dog more in need of our compassion; in need of our call to arms on their behalf; and in need of what should be the full force of our enduring sanctuary.

How do they expect the dog to get better if they don't give the poor thing its meds on a regular basis?

And it's only a 4 lb animal? Please. We had to give drops to our 20 lb fat cat, and it took all three of us to do it. He may have been a fat cat, but he was a very strong fat cat.

If I, on my 115lb lonesome, can get ear drops into a Great Dane's infected ear, then THREE PEOPLE should be able to give one Minpin a few eye drops.

It's so I can get ideas out of my head, I decided to put it in a blog in case people are bored or are curious as to the (many) things in progress.

Good grief! I can give our Manx a bath by myself. Putting drops in a dog's eye is nothing compared to that! Hell, I can give any kind of med to either of my cats by myself. And these three morons can't give a tiny dog his meds?

And my dog got warts at daycare. And I took him out till we got them treated but the person who brought there infected dog in and spread the virus also neglected to get thier kennel cough shots and brought that to daycare while we were out, it severly affected attendance which took money out of the pockets of the owners and staff and now? No more daycare because there were no profits for the daycare for 3 months striaght so we are in te process of getting new health certificates and screenings for a new private doggy daycare. Oh and we both work from home most days so we only do dog daycare because the dog loves the social aspect but we have to find a daycare where they screen for stupid because at one place we toured they "let" the dogs fight ad I really don't want a tramatized pup.

About the minpin...I can actually relate....try clipping a 20lb miniature dachshund's nails. I actually had to take him to Petsmart to get his nails clipped because he fought me tooth and (no pun ) nail.

Regarding kennel cough etc. -- did your daycare not have a rule about showing proof of vaccination from the vet?

Yes, but the owner faked it. They form their vet gave them had check boxes and they just checked the boxes. After the infection they called on each dog and checked and that dog did not have it. Also the shots are not 100% because lots of dogs with valid shots still came down with it.
It is preventive but not fool proof.

4 lb dog puts up that kind of fight? Bull. I could see perhaps that with a cat and having two people. Cause claws hurt. But really?

Our pup recently got conjunctivitis so we've been treating with eye drops. He's 14lbs, and while it works best with two people I can still do it by myself when needed. We've also been careful to not let him play with other doggies since, you know, doggie pink-eye and all that.

Pippin the guinea pig is quite small (relative to other pets) and is very good at fighting me during nail clippings, and I'm considering finding a groomer for her because I'm that fed up with it. Of course, with her the problem is the teeth. Specifically, the teeth clamping down on my fingers. Ouches.

This is what we have to go through giving a cat a pill.

Well not really, but it's not a fun prospect. Them little jokers are mean.

But if I can do it with a 14 pound hissing, spitting and yowling bundle of feline fury using just myself and a towel...they can do it for a freaking four pound yippy-skippy version of a real dog.

Thanks Mongo - was gonna throw in the towel tip myself. And eyedrops, not pilling? Yeah, that's lazy, not "it's too difficult."

TOO HARD? I'm trying not to swear so I'll just leave it at... "BLARGLERANTBLEH"

I use to have cats that fought at getting medications. We'd just wrap the cat in a blanket first so they couldn't move.

Although I do admit I'm glad our pooch's meds - her heartworm pills - taste good to her. She thinks it's a special treat. Not so much with the flea-ointment but she tolerates it at least.

I hear you. I've been considering taking Taz to the vet to get hers done. I can only do one foot per day; she's good at escaping my grip.

Mongo, that link had me ROFL. So true in fact, that when Taz had a GI infection a few months ago and needed antibotics I opted for the one time shot rather than a 7 day course of oral meds. Less traumatic for the both of us IMHO.

Yikes, what maroons !!! When kitty was sick I was so worried about her I wouldn't dream of leaving her with someone else, did not even sleep, she was so miserable. I was afraid she would die while I slept, or would need help to use the litter box or get water. Vet gave her subcutaneous fluids and IM antibiotics, she perked up in 24 hours. Then had to give my 12 lb. big ole alley cat meds twice a day by myself for 2 weeks. After a couple of days she learned meds equals treats, didn't need the towel, by the end of the two weeks it seemed she was standing there waiting for the meds with her mouth open. Claws I gotta wait til she's real relaxed and sleepy, after she makes 'happy paws' I can usually get most of her claws clipped.
