  • Anybody got any advice on marketing/selling a product online?

I've got an idea for a product (program) that may actually sell online. I think it might be one of those things that might be handy for not only individuals, but also businesses.

I have written a very basic version of it, just as a "proof of concept", and so far I'm happy with the results. I still need to add more features to it, because it's not where I want it to be yet.

I was thinking of offering a "limited functionality" version as a "shareware" version, and then selling the full version.

Though it's a relatively small program, I don't want to over or under price it. I don't want to go into too much detail about it, but I think it might be something I could sell in the $20-$30 range. Maybe.

Although I could also make two versions. A "consumer" version, and a "business" version.

I'd also eventually like to maybe make it available for mobile devices (targeting the Android market first). Though in the mobile market, I may make it cheaper.

Anyway, once I get this done, does anyone have any advice about how to market/sell it online?

Also, any advice on how to deal with the SC's that are sure to come with a deployment like this?
Skilled programmers aren't cheap. Cheap programmers aren't skilled.

    My own personal recommendations

    1) Research your market. price range, demographics, that kind of stuff

    2) look up the legalities for your product - you will likely need an EULA. You may want to hire a lawyer to go over this with you at some stage, not just for your EULA but also for any liability issues you may have.

    3) I'd recommend checking out webinars. My BF has been watching a bunch of these for his photography.... many of them focus on marketing skills.
