  • Really WHO does this!!

I am so darn angry and I keep getting angrier as I think about the situation, here is what happened. My boss came to me last week and said that the owner, J, wants to have a meeting with me and her. I, of course, am freaked out and my boss, L, said I should not worry that it would be okay. Well I stressed all weekend and yesterday we had the meeting, L did tell me the gist of the meeting beforehand and I have to say I am so damn lucky that I have been with my company for almost 19 years and that my owner loves me! J recieved a phone call from one of my classmates in my marketing class complaining about me going to class in my uniform (I do that when I have to work prior to class) because I smelled like old food, smoke and cheap perfume and she did not think I represented my company very well. Seriously! I am so damn devoted to that company and this "classmate" does NOT know me! I do not know if I am angrier at the classmate for assuming I do not represent my company very well, when in fact I am totally devoted to the company and its brand, or that they had the gumption to complain to the owner about my "smell"! I could have lost my job over a complaint like that if it was not for the fact that I have been at this company for so long and that my manager and the owner love and admire my work and devotion.

Granted I probably should not have worn my uniform to school but to think someone thought it was okay to call and complain just riles me! I am so seriously thinking of stopping at the dollar store and purchasing the rankest smelling "perfume" there and dousing myself with it before going to class! I think I know who it may have been since I sit in the same spot almost every single time! Really has this person EVER worked in the food business, you never leave there smelling like a bed of roses, especially after an eight hour shift!!

I just had to vent, and this is the safest place to sound off!

Do it, just make sure you're not wearing your uniform when you do - then, when people complain, you can (loudly) explain that since SOMEONE decided that your "work smell" was offensive to the point where they CALLED YOUR BOSS ABOUT IT, you wanted to make EXTRA SURE that it wasn't an issue again.

    Then flip them off.

Yeah...I'm inclined to think whoever lodged the complaint is a busy-body who needs to mind their own damn business.

I'm kinda sorta surprised (both experience IRL and at this site have jaded me) that your boss didn't just go "Uh-huh...Uh-huh...We'll get right on that" during the call, and then just write her off as a loony as soon as he hung up >_>

So someone going to class to better themselves after a long day at work is a *poor* representation of your company?

Nosy bitch can suck it. Probably just jealous that you actually have a job.

That's what I think, the complainer is just jealous that you have a job.

When I was in pharmacy school, some passive-aggressive twit in my class put up a note in the student lounge castigating me for wearing my white lab coat outside of lab. She (I'm assuming it was a girl who wrote this, the guys couldn't care less) said that I shouldn't think it makes me look cool, because it doesn't.

Honestly, I don't and never did give a shit about looking cool. I wore it because it had five pockets and all my crap was stuffed in them.

J and L said the person stated that I was a nice person but since they have been customers for years they were concerned about the reputation of the company and my "smelly uniform" was not good for the reputation of the company!! This person DOES NOT know me, and trust me, only one of my classmates is one of my regular customers and I know it was not her who complained. None of my other classmates come to my store, maybe to one of our other stores but I have never seen them in mine. I have a solid reputation at my store for my friendliness and my devotion to ultimate customer service! I have customers who have come to this store since I started and who I have built a solid relationship with! If anyone knows me well they would know that I would NEVER mis represent my company or do ANYTHING to tarnish its reputation! Why would I!! It is my bread and butter! I lose hours and pay if sales decrease! Like I said, my manager and my owner know this very well and really have my back, they only told me because they felt I should be told and in really an off hand way to tell me to just change clothes before I go to class. They know that I would never do anything to ever tarnish the store, in fact J said I was their number 1 fan!! I am just angry over the bitch having the guts to call and complain about something so damn stupid and to assume I did not care about my company.

Umm... lets see, you have cooking oil, meat grease, onion, garlic, sweat because it's bleeping hot in there, and other assorted food related "scents." Yeah, all of my friends who worked in the food industry complained about their own odor once they left the job for the day. And they also complained that it was reaaaaallly hard to get the scent out of clothing too, no matter how many times you washed them.

Heck, I worked in the front office of a repair center and still occasionally smelled of motor oil if I had to go back to lawn and garden. It's just part of the job.

Your "classmate" is seriously screwed in the head. It's the scent of hard work, that's what it is.. and it's likely something she'll never do.

Losing your job because.....you came to school in your work uniform.

Yeah, not likely, but stranger things have happened.

Better for one to go to class in their uniform smelling vaguely of food, than to go to class in their pajamas and smelling strongly of BO, says I.

Bitch was thinking, "Ooh, Mater and Pater didn't send me to marketing school just to have me sit next to a member of the plebian masses! I deserve better, since I am SO much better than someone who actually works before coming to school!"

I know I'm assuming a lot, but I think my assumption that Bitch's parents are sponsoring her education is a safe assumption. No, I don't think there's anything wrong with a young adult being supported by her parents through school, but damnit, a person who is in such a privileged position ought to respect - even admire - someone who is working her way through school! F**k her and the elitist horse she rides to school.

I would have said to her, "and what are you going to do about it? My manager already gave me the okay to come in the way I did." Then get info as to where SHE works so you might be able to pull the same crap so she shuts up.

I went to class tonight but I did not sit in my usual spot, I sat up front instead. The ladies and one gent that sits at my normal table are also part of my group for our marketing presentation. I am almost sure of who it was because one of the ladies was in a previous class with me and I am sure she never said anything because I wore my uniform to that class also. There are two more ladies in the group and one I know is not the culprit because she sits on the opposite side of the room so that leaves the last lady who I believe is really the person who did this. The 4 girls who sit in front of me just do not seem like the kind who would go through the trouble of looking up the owner's number let alone calling to complain, I know a couple of them work in the restaurant business so I am sure they understand.

I did take my professor aside and told him about it, he was shocked and told me that a person who would do that has a small mind and not to worry, he even said that if I was uncomfortable coming to class that he would work with me and then he asked if I wanted him to call my owner and tell her that I have always been professional when talking about my job and representing the company and that I am a stellar student and he is glad to have me and my experience in his class!!! I love this professor, this is the second class I have taken with him and he is awesome! I told him that he did not have to do that as my owner and manager know that I would never do anything to tarnish the company. He also said that if I needed time to go home and change clothes before class that he was okay with me being late for class and then reassured me again that I was well liked in the class and whoever did this was just small minded!

I am still very angry but I am just going to hold my head high and go on! I just do not like the feeling that I am back in high school where I was picked on endlessly about how I dressed, looked and such! It has taken me more than thirty years to overcome the humiliation and to build my self esteem and my reputation and then to have one person try to knock that out of me, for whatever reason, well it just hurts! I will survive! I always have and I will continue!
