  • The dept. store's final sale

I worked at the parking garage across the street from the dept. store that was closing last Saturday. That day was their final sale, and what was on sale were rugs and furs. The parking fee at the garage I worked at on Saturday's is $5.00. There is no discount parking and no hourly parking. I dealt with several sucky customers that day such as....

The female customer who told me "You should be ashamed of yourself for charging the dept. store customers $5.00 to park. Afterall, the dept. store name is on the garage." My response to her was "The dept. store only has naming rights. The dept. store does not own the garage. There is a big difference between naming rights and ownership." She continued to complain and so I told her "I am a cashier, and I have no control over anything around here. So you are speaking to the wrong person about this." She said nothing to me after that.

The old bat who refused to pay $5.00 because she found nothing at the dept. store that she wanted. She told me that since I am working inside the booth, I should be able to give her and every other dept. store customer an hourly rate for their parking. My reply to her was "I have no other choice but to charge everyone a $5.00 parking fee no matter how long they were here, that my employer has no control over what is on sale at the dept. store and that I have no control over the parking fee." She wanted the e-mail address to the manager over the garage, who happens to be my current supervisor, and so I gave it to her. She did pay for her parking, and I gave her a receipt with my supervisor's e-mail address.

The sucky male customer who literally refused to pay for his parking because he found nothing at the dept. store that he wanted. He held up traffic, and he would not budge. So security had to be called. He finally paid, but he wanted my full name, my employers name, my supervisors name, and my supervisors contact number because he wanted to report me. I gave him a receipt with my supervisors name and contact information on it.

What the heck, parking fees are parking fees. Just...ridiculous. Gotta love people who try and hold you, yourself, responsible for a company's policy. /sigh

WHat did security do with the last guy? Did they just tow his car out? I hope he got the banhammer.

The five bucks wasn't to pay for store access, let alone item availability -- it was to pay for PARKING! Morons.

i always find the "I refuse to pay this bill!" mentality interesting.

people really seem to think that refusing to pay bills - be it parking, or credit cards etc, actually means they don't have to pay and that everyone will just say "ok then"

Ha, yes. I remember a guy years ago who called customer service to complain that we wouldn't take his ads anymore (this was before we went to the prepay system). He was asked if he had not received his bills in the mail. He said yes, but "I never open those." Was still angry that we refused to do business with him until he paid up.

But surely somewhere on the receipt, in the small print, it says that customers who don't find anything worth buying don't have to pay for their parking ...

I managed it. I did my elective at *really prestigious university*. They charge a significant sum for it because they do all the organising (you aren't allowed to contact any supervisors yourself etc).

They pretty much didn't. I didn't get a proper timetable or details on how to contact anyone. Every time I moved dept, the consultant had literally just started annual leave, and no-one had heard of me. In the out-patient departments, this normally meant that they weren't even seeing patients. I didn't get matriculated until halfway through (didn't even know I was meant to) meaning I didn't get access to wifi in the expensive halls nor the discount for being an actual student with the uni. Which meant I didn't even have a proper badge to prove who I was. And of course the woman doing the organising had also gone on annual leave.

They got in touch with me about 3 months after the elective had finished asking me to pay the fee. I straight up refused to pay and explained why in a politely but strongly worded email. Didn't hear back from them, so assuming that they don't care. Then a month after that, I got a phone call from one of the amin departments saying they'd received paper work about me wanting to do an elective with them. Sigh.

I do not know what security did after that, and I do not know what the garage manager did if he called him to complain about having to pay $5.00 for his parking even though he did not find anything worth buying.

He caused a traffic backup, and there were customers honking at him and yelling at him to just pay and leave. But he would not budge. When security came, he finally paid.
