  • "I know people get breaks, but really?"

That's what I heard as I passed the couple, just after I'd gone on break. My manager had told me to turn off my light and go after my last person. I did turn it off, and of cours this couple came up after. Still, I had decided I'd just help them anyway, but a coworker came up for backup and I asked nicely if she'd take over so we wouldn't get behind. It's not like I left the couple there not taken care of. And yet 5 mins later they were complaining to each other. Would she rather I just pass out from low glucose? I'd like to see her deal with that.

Oh no, doing that would be far too inconvenient for her.

I love the way she's like, I know people have breaks. As you're going for your break wtf does she expect. The fact you've stayed open to help her is nice. I know people who once that light goes off literally scowl at people that try to use that lane

Yeah, good restraint on your part. I would have been thinking (and maybe even said if I was brave enough), "Oh, I had my light off and decided to be courteous and check you guys out anyway, and you're still going to complain?"

        Some people. I'd swear.

I would take whoever was in my line at the time my light went off. If someone got behind them and didn't have too much, I'd take them. Otherwise, I'd tell them to go to another lane.

What hell would've been raised had I told them the line was closed?? And earlier the guy behind me had to keep taking people because even though he told them he had to leave, they just kept piling stuff on the counter. It's not like we just suddenly decide to take a break or go home whenever. Those things are scheduled. I guess people are totally ignorant of that.

Don't you know that of course you can take your break -- but only when it inconveniences somebody else?

I think that was the greatest thing about handing in my two weeks notice. I no longer cared if someone came up after my light was off and the "lane closed" sign was down.. whenever we could find one of the darned things.

I would cheerfully tell them I'm closed and they'd have to go to another lane. I mean, what was management gonna do? Fire me? No longer caring about stats, customers, or management actually improved everything except the management.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.
