  • My experience at the Toronto Hemp Company (long and funny!)

NOTE: I do not smoke or consume marijuana, nor its totally legal and mostly red-tape-free cousin hemp, and I don't intend to do so.

My friend and I wandered into the Toronto Hemp Company (aka THC), wondering what kind of hemp products it sold. I was naively assuming that it just sold hemp bags and paper.

Boy, was I WRONG! And their disclaimer sign saying that they sold nothing illegal should have given me that hint. But, curiosity got the better of me, and we went in.

Another note: Marijuana is legal if it is used for medicinal purposes where I live, but there are restrictions, otherwise you'd see more stores like this. My friend and I only browsed the ground floor, since the second floor was all about cannabis-related glass tubes and containers, and I noticed a sign on the staircase leading to the basement floor holding plants and gardening supplies that said someone had to let you in.

Here's where it gets funny. I saw some packages that I thought were bars of plain old chocolate.

    Me: guess who?
Clerk: The guy who answered my questions.

Me: Do you guys sell medical marijuana?
Clerk: No, but we are affiliated with (name of pain centre) that does. We also are affiliated with a store that sells cannabis seeds.
Me (pointing to "chocolate bars"): Ok, but what are these?
Clerk: Flavoured papers (for rolling marijuana in).
Me: Oh, I thought that they were chocolates!
Clerk: No, we can't be THAT open!

Cue me explaining that I thought that they were plain old marijuana-free chocolates!

The kicker? When we finally left the store, my friend jokingly told me that I was a bad influence on him!

Depends really. Around here 2 adult shops have signs like that because... they don't want to be blacklisted from the local base.

For one store it's more of a moot point cos they only sell DVDs anyway (so among the adult stores they're pretty much "vanilla" anyway).

For another store ("J") they sell "herbal tobacco" products along with their adult products. But it's also part of competitive business with a third adult store 2 doors down from them. J sometimes puts up signs stating "never been blacklisted" & "never been raided" ... because the "3rd adult store HAS been blacklisted by the military. And raided. (multiple raids actually).
