  • Don't talk about work on facebook? (language)

    My dad got really upset with me because I have been talking about work on facebook...but nothing really bad. (i complained about a smoker, and noted a guy yelled at me for when we had high rates....then asked a question regarding if I made a mistake, is it generally okay to call boss and apologize)

    I don't get why we have to worry about what we say on facebook, even the small things.
    Its one thing of I say, "guest named x x x is such a fucking asshole" or, "My boss named y y y y y is a horrible man" with details, but I'm getting tired of being chewed out over it, even when I was asking what I thought was a reasonable question and peoples thoughts. (we all work, what would you do?) But I'm tired of being told to censor myself even from saying mundane things. -.-;

    If its for fratching, give me a heads up. But My dad is seriously chewing me out over...although the question about the boss was from yesterday and I'm surprised he could find it, considering I made like 30 statuses since then. :P

    He's probably trying to protect you - a lot of companies monitor social media, looking for any references to themselves. If they find anything that can be construed as less than 100% "drinking the company Kool-aid" posted by an employee, some have been known to take action (up to and including termination) against the employees. That's why people here are encouraged to obfuscate (for example, the "Peterbilt of Natural Selection" has never seen the inside of a Paccar plant).
    Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

      I keep my media private, none of my coworkers or boss are on my page.

      I can understand it to an extent, I really can. Protecting guests and job secrets, for example, but I can't even say "All of my tasks are done, yay for doing 46 check outs and doing everything with an hour to spare"?

      Or "I'm wonder woman at work"? I can't be postive, neutral, or negative without my father getting upset.

      I think it's sometimes ridiculous. I love my job, though, no kool-aid needed, but if I have a rough day, I should at least be able to say that much about it on social media, as long as nothing too severe is there. (this all opinion, so don't hurt me ;o; )

        In this day and age, you can't keep a secret if it is on the internet. Just ask GK.

        While your setting are secure, can you guarantee that your friends settings are secure? Are you sure that all your friends don't have any friends that work for your company?

        While I think your father is going a little overboard, I can also see where he is coming from. It seems like once a month you see a news article about someone who was fired for a social media posting.

        And while I think you should be able to say "I had a bad day at work," your employer may think otherwise. The law seems to be on their side.

        Be careful.

          I concur. The old saying "if you wouldn't post it on a huge billboard by the roadside, you probably shouldn't post it online (and ESPECIALLY NOT on Facebook)!" is still valid.

          As other have said, this is the exact reason why a) some of the forums in here are behind a login and protected by Google bots + b) posters are asked not to mention their place of work (or at least obfuscate the name). But even these precautions can be (and have been) compromized - lately, the Reddit subforum "Tales From Retail" have edited their rule so names of workplaces are not to be mentioned AT ALL, not even in an obfuscated form.

          Another theory states that this has already happened.

            Because all it takes is for the company to hear that you are talking about customers in a negative manner and you'll be fired before you know it.

                This is why so many people, notably celebrities, always claim their Twitter account got "hacked" when something they put up goes viral. "Hacked" to them means "Someone I didn't think would find it found it".

                The internet is NOT a private place, never has been, never will be.

                  One thing to keep in mind -- If anyone who CAN see your page Shares (or, I think, Likes) anything you post, it will appear on their Timeline, no matter how secure your privacy settings are.

                    Everything has been noted;

                    As for all of my connections, I do have a couple mutual friends with certain coworkers...but they don't actively search me out...

                    However, I spoke a littttle bit about it with one of the bosses. (I do mean little)
                    He said, "don't go overboard."

                    Pretty vague, but so are my work-related statuses unless its a positive thing.

                    Last night I had to delete a post because I mentioned that due to how the schedule got set up I would only get four hours of sleep due to how hectic things would be (That's ALL I said) ((Details for CS: 8 hour rest until next shift after working overtime for 10 hours))

                    I was honestly not thinking, I was whining about little sleep, not the schedule. lol (Yay more money!)
                    But one of my friends jumped onto saying "ILLEGAL ILLEGAL" without knowing the situation... so...the moment she started, I deleted it. That was my fault.

                    But I've been keeping my work grouch from the past few days with other coworkers who have the same grouch (i'll make a list to post later)

                    Its just frustrating. I have no problem censoring details/extreme thoughts, at work or online, for customer service, I have no problem holding back there, otherwise I would have been gone first week...

                    I'mma ask more about it in detail, cause I couldn't find anything in the handbook still. Reread that sucker 5 times now

                      I never post work stuff on facebook. I don't even list my employer in my profile. I've been a member here 7 or 8 years because I can say what I need to here. I'm so grateful this forum exists. <-----actually started to tear up when I typed that.

                        My company is like this too. They're not jerks about it or anything, but we're a high security center so you have to disclose if you talk about Fight Club anywhere. Not so they can spy on you, but more if something does happen they know where to look to find out who did what. I had to disclose my tomfoolery here to them for example. Not that they mind as I always make sure to keep things sanitary. In fact I'm pretty sure they read it for lawlz.... >.>

                        My old company was more domineering about it. One girl got fired for slagging off about the boss and the VP on her webpage. Though in fairness, she was in full on slander mode about them both and naming them by name.

                            My employee section on my facebook?

                            A now defunct haunted house. LOL From when I was 18.

                            I don't mind tearing a vent up in here, but I usually keep the mundane things to facebook, because, I know people there a bit more personally who are actually interested in the smaller things lol

                            I have a vent coming up maybe tomorrow, cause this week DID make me want to shake and destroy things x_x;

                            On facebook? All they heard was "yay! tasks done!"
                            or "give me my WW cape"
                            "Always fun to surprise the guests when they think I don't understand or speak Japanese..." aside from the general question about calling a boss if you make a mistake.

                              interesting. not surprised though.

                              for me, most of my posts are derby-related, political comments, random photos / funnies, or dog stuff (either of my dog or re-sharing the shelter's posts).

                              when it comes to work i don't post to FB. and none of my coworkers were on my FB either. (except when i was military - friends were on FB then but... i seriously didn't post about work cos that could be a giant opsec fail)

                              and yeah, "hacking" ... slightly off topic but i've seen that excuse used for image stealing too - or rather hot-linking to someone else's image, and the person hosting the image gets revenge by switching it with an XXX image.

                              Happened to one of the guys on another message board I'm on. He changed the image and then another boardie pretended to be an offended parent and wrote a complaint to the radio station about their webpage. when they claimed "hacked" ... well the other guy already knew the truth and set them straight.
