  • about to go all SC here....

    ....and resisting my darndest. Seriously.

So a couple months ago I started building raised gardens, and have been STUPID excited about this. Like, overly happy puppy excited. I haven't had my own garden since I moved from SC as a kid.

Anyways, so the main issue we ran into was dirt/compost. We have a tiny, beatup, sedan. It would not be able to get the amount of dirt we need, so I had to shop around. Tried calling around for local guys, nobody knew who to call, or what to do...but just about every one of them asked if I'd tried talking to Fairly Famous Farm Store. F3S for short. I'd always assumed F3S mostly dealt with tractors, and their supplies ( ) but, lo and behold, they don't just do that stuff.

So I went down to F3S, which happens to be less than a 2 minute drive from my house, and talked to the manager. They were currently out of topsoil and compost, but "were sure to get some on the next truck", and they even promised delivery to our home. Cool deal.

Oh, but I need to pay upfront. Ok, no probs. Paid on the spot.

Next week rolls around, and nobody showed with the dirt. gave the store a ring, and it didn't come in. They say that sometimes it can take two weeks, but never more than that. Ah...well...they didn't tell me that. But ok.

Second week. No dirt. More promises.

Third week, I'm miffed, I should've had my plants in a week ago now. Store says its corporate's fault for not sending stuff over, so I call up customer service for F3S, and ask to file a complaint. Not against the store, persay, but just so that it's known that the store is not getting the shipment inventory they need, and that my order is way late. CS says that the store never put in a raincheck order. Nor have they activated their inventory system. But hey, they promise this will all be settled, they will email/call the store now, and I should get things cleared up soon. Okay....

Fourth week. Nothing. I called up AGAIN, and talk with the manager for a long time, who tells me that no stores for a 2 hour radius have topsoil or compost. The HECK? This is F3S, these are supposed to be STAPLES at the stores! I explain how I talked to corporate again, same deal. Oh, we'll talk to them, and expect a call from the store manager tomorrow.

No call from her, so I wait, and call the next day, and finally get a hold of the manager after two calls.

Store manager talks to me for a while, explaining that stuff is "going crazy here", and that "this is the buyer's fault, we aren't getting what we need". Okay, well, I paid already for this, and had a direct order placed, why isn't my order coming in? This is super fishy from my perspective. She says she will call me tomorrow, when she gets her shipping lists, and let me know whats going on.

No call from her again. So, I call up the store. They get extremely dodgy on the phone when they realize who I am, and won't give the phone to the manager. I call back an hour later, same thing. Several hours after that, same thing again.

Giving up on calling, I went to the store myself. Walked in, and waited a good ten minutes before she finally showed up, after being paged. The cashier looked pretty nervous, I probably wasn't helping with my pacing.

Store manager tells me that she got the lists yesterday (WTF WHY DIDN'T YOU CALL ME THEN) and that my order is not listed again (SERIOUSLY THAT WAS IMPORTANT TO KNOW). She says that it should be in next week. I guess the look on my face was pretty scary, because she is all "I'll just give you a refund if you want, guess you'll just have to drive to <town twenty minutes away> and get it yourself." Wtf lady, we've discussed multiple times that we have a tiny car, who couldn't handle that. Was that her being snarky? I don't know, and honestly I'm at the verge of tears at this point, so I just kind of....went all frozen. Best way I can describe it. Told her that I want to be assured by Saturday that my order's coming in. And tell her that I'm going home right now to update corporate on this...and I just turned and walked away. Didn't want to cry in front of the entire darned store, so I made it out to the car before I broke down.

Called up corporate again, who decides to inform me "Um, didn't anyone at that store tell you they are labeled out of season for topsoil and compost?" The...heck. We are Zone 7, this is the PERFECT time for that! "Oh, well, someone at the store must've done that. They won't ever get any more dirt or compost. Not this year. I don't know why they even attempted your order."

    I'm furious now.

I ask for the district manager's contact information...which...they won't give me. But they promise that he'll contact me within 48 hours.

He'd better, honestly. I'm now weeks behind, I'm frustrated, and I'm tired of being given the runaround. I never thought this was going to happen, and frankly, I'm about to the point of telling them I want a partial refund for this shenanigan. I don't want to be an SC, I've tried to be as patient and nice as possible, but this is ridiculous. We're at about five weeks now, and I have no idea if they're going to come through or not.

You should be wanting a full refund.

They pretty much straight up lied to you, for weeks just to keep your money. You are not being an SC. They are being a Sucky Business.

Yeah, but I still want my dirt/compost. I'm serious when I say that our car wouldn't be able to handle it. I had to order like 70 bags...our car could handle maybe 10? 15? Would not be a fun endeavor, I can tell you that much.

So, I mean, I want them to still get some money out of it, it'd be only fair. But it is incredibly sucky of them to be doing this.

You need a friend with a truck. Sorry I don't live closer.

Hope this gets settled. And keep us updated. It sounds like the ball was dropped multiple times on this one. Dropped and bounced right out the door, even.

Full refund. Not a penny less.

Is there any way you could rent a pickup truck for long enough to drive somewhere else to get what you need? Or borrow a larger vehicle from a friend or relative? There's no way you should have to deal with this store again.

We have a friend with one....but I upset his wife last year, and now she won't let him have anything to do with us anymore. Whoops.

Friend scenario, mentioned above. I have no family in the area, unfortunately. Renting's a possibility, but would be pretty darn expensive. ><

Is this something that can be ordered online? I guess not otherwise you would have already.

If you lived close to me, we could use my truck.

If you have a U-Haul location nearby, check with them. The ones around here have pickups you can rent for in-town use for $20 + mileage. If the store's close to you, it may be an option.

Fuck this partial refund business. Full refund, and never deal with these incompetent asshats again.

Ask a neighbor, friend, coworker, someone if they can help you out, either by lending you an appropriate vehicle, or by them using driving wherever to go pick this stuff up.

Or look into companies that you can purchase the stuff online and they will deliver it to you. Just by googling "topsoil and compost delivered" I came up with many options, though of course I have no idea which of these would work best for you.

But enough with F3S. They have made it abundantly clear that they can't tell the difference between a hole in the ground and their own asshole, AND that they really couldn't give two steaming piles of shit about you or your business. So write them off, demand--and GET--a full refund, and move the fuck on to a business that wants your business and knows how to treat their customers.

The on the store staff + lawn clippings would compost up well for next year.

They WON'T come through - I'd believe corporate's statement that the products have been labeled "out of season". Immediate FULL refund. The biggest suck I can see is that if they've labelled it as out of season, other possible sources have probably done the same thing, and would be selling from inventory - these guys have kept you waiting for 5 weeks for something they should have known would never arrive, meanwhile alternate sources you could have gone to at the beginning (if you had known that F3S wouldn't be getting any more) have had 5 weeks to sell off their remaining stock before you knew you had to go elsewhere.

There's a reason their name ends with a particular pair of letters well-known to people on this board - their actions seem to be designed to produce that to which we apply the letter pair.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

Another vote for a full refund. Maybe your former friend can't help you but how about a neighbour? I recently won a Herby Curby in a draw at the mall ... no problem, I thought, I'll tuck it in my trunk, hold the trunk closed with bungee cords and we're set. Ha. The only way I'll fit it into my car is if I take the car's roof off. So I asked a neighbour who owns a van. She's available but not till next week. I will buy her lunch or pay for her gas or something in recompense. Maybe you could work out something similar?

Also, maybe you could check online ... Craigslist, or we have Kijiji up here ... people often post that they have pickups/vans and will cart stuff around for a small fee.

But absolutely demand a full refund. This store has jerked you around for over a month. Enough is enough. You have been nicer than I would've been under the same circumstances.

Well wish I lived anywhere close. Have a truck, would be more then happy to drive (just couldn't physically pick up the bags ). I agree, full refund time.

Well, I'm done with them. Corporate decided to reaffirm that it's not really anything to be done, "it's out of season".

So out of curiosity, I called up the other F3S store that's a twenty minute drive away....and they have it in stock. And "no, it's not out of season...who would say that"? I was shaking when I hung up. Was polite, but shaking with fury. I don't appreciate being yanked around like this, not one bit. Especially for over a month.

I went on down to the F3S store, they recognized me the second I walked in. I immediately got a "we've been on the phone and trying to figure out why they aren't sending any" and I just was like, don't even worry about it anymore. I want a full refund. I'm done. I'm being lied to, and I really am not happy about it.

They were obviously really surprised about it, but...I just took my refund, and left.

                              Update:

Just got off the phone after calling around various local landscaping businesses, the farm bureau, and even town freaking hall, lol. Finally found a landscaper who was willing to tell me where they got their mulch/compost from....and lo and behold. They provide topsoil as well. And deliver to my area.

....icing on the cake was that once I explained my quandary, they offered it at half the price I was paying F3S. And said they'll do their best to deliver it tomorrow.

Now that is customer service. Holy cow.
